Lunch at the Pump Room, Bath, England

When we were in Bath a couple of weeks ago, Mr. DJ suggested we have lunch in the Pump Room. Well, what’s a girl to do? Of course, I agreed!

The small print says Stephen Clews: Graham Plumb Licensed in Pursuance of Act of Parliament for Public Singing & Dancing. Licensed to Sell Intoxicating Liquor for Consumption on the Premises.

The Pump Room was a place for socializing “back in the day”–that would be oh, more than two hundred years ago. Today, it is still a place to “take the waters” in Bath. Yum yum, warm mineral water! If you just want to take a look at the beautiful interior, entrance is free.
The exterior of the Pump Room. I love those Oval windows.
Today, the Pump Room is a fine restaurant that serves Breakfast, Lunch, High Tea and Dinner. I can’t be certain, but it looked like the Lunch and Dinner menus were identical. We were there for a late lunch–about 2:30. I don’t know what the lunch crowd is like normally, but we were able to be seated pretty much immediately. However, as we were finishing up, the tea time line was long–way past the revolving doors, almost to the hallway by the loos.
We had a lovely, leisurely lunch that rolled right into High Tea. If we go back, I’d like to have tea there! They offer traditional high tea and a “champagne tea”, which means you get champagne instead of tea. What a great idea! With your tea or champagne, you are presented with a tiered plate stand full of traditional sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and little desserts including a pink “dessert shot” in a shot glass.

I am sorry to say, I was so engrossed and overwhelmed with the whole Pump Room experience that I totally forgot to take photos of our lunch. Okay, you try being an Austen fan and not swoon in the Pump Room! Seriously, here’s my tea…
…and Roxi’s dessert, a caramel tarte that she could barely eat after her entree of grilled salmon. The two course lunch is starter and entree or entree and dessert and costs about £18 per person. High Tea is £15.50-21.oo per person. Al la carte alternatives are available.

Sara, you are going to LOVE Bath. I hope you get to have tea at least in the Pump Room. Do you know if you will? I was SO giddy there. I am sure my husband and daughter were rolling their eyes. ;-)
