My blogging friend Laurie put up a post about the North American Wife Carrying Championship. The the winner gets his wife’s weight in beer plus a cash prize (the wife’s weight times 5).

That got me thinking about another interesting race right here in England: the Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake. In this contest, a wheel of Double Gloucester Cheddar is let loose from the top of a hill and a bunch of people go running (and tumbling) after it. Apparently the 7-8 pound wheel of cheese can roll 70 miles per hour! I wonder how it stays upright the whole time…
I might have to go see this in person on Monday, 26 May 2008. It’s not a holiday for Roxi’s school, but certainly this could be counted as an educational field trip.

Hahahahaha!!!!!!!! I would definitely take an educational field trip day off to see that. I bet it’s hilarious. People falling down make me laugh. Bad, Laurie.

Laurie–they’ve been rolling cheese down that hill for more than 200 years. I’m sure it would count as a history field trip.

I love double Gloucester, especially the Huntsman (spliced with Stilton)!

Mimsy–We had some double Gloucester last night. It was so creamy and good. Mmmmm–Stilton! There are so many yummy cheeses here, and so many differnt varieties of Cheddar. I feel a bit like Wallace of Wallace and Gromit.
