Prague: Church of St. Nicholas and a Beer Hall

Right, so I’m almost done with our October trip to Prague. Just one more post after this…

The Church of St. Nicholas is located in Prague’s Little Quarter not far from our hotel. That’s it on the right. The green dome is the same one we saw in the second photo from my St. Vitus post two days ago (the one you liked, Alyson).

The Church of St. Nicholas was built in the 1700s in the Baroque style. Think heavy, gilded lavishness.

ceilinginchurchofstnicholas1There are some really amazing paintings on the walls, dark stuff that you can’t even see unless you stand in a certain way. But if you look up, the ceilings are light and airy.

The organ is located upstairs in the back. Look at all that gold.

A close up of the organ and the ceiling. There are evening concerts here, too (also in the Castle Quarter). Maybe next time.

A little graffiti from the 1800s on the railing upstairs.

And speaking of graffiti, here’s some in the modern part of Prague.

We had a very late lunch in the Municipal House, a very well preserved Art Nouveau building. Built in the early 1900s, the Municipal House is home to a bunch of restaurants and a concert hall (of course).

We enjoyed lunch downstairs in the Plzeňská Restaurace. If you follow that link, you can see the maître d’. He was very friendly.

We wanted to go to the Mucha Museum and the Museum of Communism, but Mr. DJ wasn’t up to it. Roxi and I were so stuffed after our lunch that we all decided just to go back to the hotel.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Roxi is home with a cold today. I sure hope she gets over this bug before we leave for Germany on Saturday! I see that it’s snowing there. Ugh.

Time to get out the chicken soup. I’ll bet a little Texas Chili would help, too! Get well soon, Roxi! Mimsy

Beautiful photos! They would make a neat travel journal or scrapbook. Oh! You could make your own ‘coffee table’ book by uploading them to one of those sites that allows you to upload photos or scrapbook pages and they will print them into a hard cover book. They are really nice to look at.

Texasgal–I was thinking about something like that too. I’d actually like to just get a years worth of my blog printed out at a time. Have you tried that?
