Prague Farewell: Petřín Hill

Our last day from our trip to Prague in October. If you’ve missed the rest of the posts, you can check out the Prague link on the sidebar to the right. One day I’ll finish categorizing the rest of my posts from last year!

After a delicious late lunch in the Little Quarter, we wanted to take the funicular railway up Petřín Hill. We needed to leave the city in about six hours, so there was plenty of time to do this, return to the hotel, grab our bags, and take the shuttle (or as Roxi calls it, the “Simpsons Hit and Run” mobile) to the airport.

To our disappointment, the funicular wasn’t running that day. I am not sure if it is seasonal, but I definitely understood the “closed” sign on the station door.

No worries, we needed to work off that big lunch anyway. Plus Mr. DJ finally was feeling better, AND it stopped raining.

It was a beautiful walk up this steep hill.

Luckily, there were plenty of opportunities to rest if we needed them. The only thing is, it was too cold to sit on those benches!

At the top is a mini-Eiffel Tower. Built in 1891, the Petřín Tower is about a fifth the size of the original back in Paris. Interestingly, because it sits atop Petřín Hill, this tower is actually at the same elevation as the Eiffel Tower. You can climb the 400 steps to the top, but we elected to take a tea break. Mr. DJ went downstairs to check out the Museum of Jara Cimrman, the Genius who did not become famous, while I worked in my journal and Roxi finished reading Something Wicked This Way Comes.

After our break, we decided to do the Mirror Maze. Rick Steves says it is “nothing special but fun to quickly wander through since you’re already here”.

We thought it was great fun! It definitely wins the award of being the nicest hall of mirrors we’ve ever been in. They had wacky mirrors at the end.

Mr. DJ decided we ought to go down the hill on the other side because we would end up closer to our hotel. What we didn’t count on were the lovely evening views (and the muddy paths, but that’s okay).

We made it to our hotel in time to have yet another cup of tea and to thaw out a bit before our flight.

Well, that’s it, the last of the Prague posts. Whew! And just in time too. We’re off to Germany tomorrow and won’t be back until the beginning of next month.

Happy Easter and auf Wiedersehen!

Once again, beautiful photos! (notice that I said photos like a brit, and not pictures like an american :-) I love the fall leaves set against all the beautifully aged buildings. Anyway, have fun in Germany!

Alyson–I’m glad you still have your British accent (haha). I was so excited about the leaves in Prague. The leaves mostly turn yellow here in England. I missed the oranges and reds.

Laurie–Thank you! And as you already know, we didn’t make it to Germany this time…
