When in Bruges…

… one MUST indulge in the local cuisine. Bruges is known for its handmade chocolates, by the way. Mmmmm. Good thing we walked a lot that day. And if you didn’t already know, Belgian beer is really good. The only thing is there are so many varieties! Too many choices, too little time.

Chocolate Shops

We tried those Belgian Lace biscuits, er cookies.

And actually after looking at all that chocolate, we were so overwhelmed that we just wanted a couple of pieces. These from the Chocolate Corner were so fresh!

Of course, we stopped for “tea” too.

Roxi and Mr. DJ each ordered a Belgian Waffle.

I had a warm apple torte with ice cream AND Chantilly cream.

Roxi and I had cappuccinos.

And Mr. DJ tried the Duvel.

Dinner was at the Brasserie Vivaldi. It was delicious!

We sat at the table in the front on the far left.

My salad.

My moules frites or mussels steamed in white wine with fries on the side (Dad, I was thinking of you!). On the far left is Roxi’s steak.

Mr. DJ had lambchops. They were soooo good. Roxi liked that sauce and stole some for her steak. Those golden sticks in the front were like really high-end tater tots, um, croquettes.

Roxi and I had Cokes. Mr. DJ did tried a few of the many hundred beers brewed in Belgium. Here we have Leffe

… and Brugse Tripel

… and Hoegaarden. I liked this one best.

Yep, Belgium is now my favorite.

  2. Barrie says:

It all looks so delicious. Yum.

You should have a warning: Do not read this on an empty stomach! That is one of the most delicious looking cappuccinos I’ve ever seen. I think that I would almost be satisfied with that — and maybe a side of chocolate.

Visited Bruges many years ago when I had a Belgian Penfriend. Always hankered after going back. Your discriptions and terrific photos have made me want to dash to the travel agent right away and get booked in.

    Laurie–It’s right up there :-)

    Barrie–I know. I’m starving now.

Bee–Haha! You’re probably right. I could go for a slice of that apple tart right now.

Barbara–Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I hope you will make it back soon. I’d love return for a weekend and experience Bruges after dark. I bet it’s lovely.

Those desserts are to die for! I’m surprised Roxi already has a taste for cappuccinos. My 16 year old just started on lattes and the odd morning coffee.

  7. Alyson says:

Oh yummy! You lucky girl, getting to indulge in such choice, European goodies!

Christine–She just found out that she likes coffee and only drinks it on occasion, usually when we are travelling. She likes her brew with a liberal dollop of milk, though she tried her dad’s espresso once and said it was pretty good.

Alyson–I know! I’ve had some incredible food in lots of places, but I think Europe definitely has the scenery working for it.

    the coffee looks DIVINE!!!!!!

I just ate chocolate with my breakfast but after reading this post I want more!!! I love Belgian chocolate, even those chocolate bars with the elephant on them ;-)

I remember being on a train in Germany somewhere and offering our compartment mates some Swiss chocolate we had. The women in the green suede suit wearing a charm-like bracelet with gold Krugerrands hanging off it said “no, have some of ours, its Belgian…” and we did.
I fell in love immediately :-)

This was in the mid-80′s so a suede suit was really something them, not to mention the bracelet.

Your blog is turning into a groaning board…so many delicious treats, so little time! Food, glorious food! But what about those fries??? Were they as good as they are supposed to be? I thought the Belgians served them in cone-shaped containers or is that just the carry-out kind?

When we lived in the Netherlands as ex-pats, we lovd going to Belgium for the American store in Antwerp, Leonidas chocolates and the pastries. Loved your photos. I miss living abroad. We also lived in London for awhile. It was just an accident that our flat was just a block from Harrods which was very cool back in those days, not so trashy touristy as it is now.

  13. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Joni–It was decadent. I have never had chantilly cream in my capuccino before!

Susan–Wow, only in Europe would someone turn down Swiss chocolate for something else! But Belgian chocolate is special. Even the kind with the elephant on it ;-) Hey, I still add travel charms to my silver bracelet from childhood. Does that make me stuck in the 80s? I did give up my big permed hair decades ago, though–hahaha!

Mimsy–I know what you’re thinking–Cafe R in the Village, right? Those fries are to die for and so cute served in a paper cone and in a little stand. The ones we had in Bruges were good but not nice and skinny like the ones at Cafe R. Roxi and I had fries in a cone in The Hague a few days after Bruges. I’ll write about that sometime this week.

Ginny–Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I love hearing about other expat experiences. The chocolates and pastries are definitely a huge plus here in Europe ;-)
