More Hurricane Ike Aftermath

Sorry, but it seems like I’ve only been able to think about Hurricane Ike damage these days. I finally heard that my in-law’s house on Galveston Island had 4+ feet of water in it. That would be at least as high as the kitchen counters. The garage door is in the driveway and the iron gate and brick wall on the side of their house toppled over. Windows were pushed in but not broken (they have hurricane shutters). I know they were lucky, but it still makes me sad.
Oh, my mother-in-law went out to look for their sailboat, but didn’t see it. I wonder where it might be?
Good news, though–one of my mother-in-law’s friends we were unsure of is safe and is in San Antonio now.
I haven’t heard from my parents in two days. I know cell phones are unreliable and my parent’s land line phone has run out of batteries. But I hope their electricity comes on soon. I sure would like to hear from them. If you’re wondering about power in Houston, you can check this CenterPoint Energy PDF. It was updated yesterday and lists Houston zip codes and % out. I see almost everyone in my parent’s neighborhood is out.
By the way, if you’re wondering about the Chunnel after last week’s fire, I did see that Eurostar is running limited service. Best to check Eurostar’s website for details.

Don’t apologise! Apart from it being your blog, many of us here want to know your news anyway!
As someone who lives in Miami but is about to make a big move of his own, I completely sympathize. Your family is really lucky! I’m glad they got through it without too much damage. I heard that a group of historic buildings near the seashore are completely gone though, along with everything else that’s been flooded and such. I sincerely hope Galveston does not become another Katrina.
Emm–You’re so nice. I like hearing from all of you too. Loved the post about your sweet pets today. It cheered me up!
Xoán-Wahn–Thanks for the sympathy. You all certainly have had your share of storms! It really is a mess in Galveston. I know they’ll recover, but yeah, it’s sad.
:0) I aim to please.
Don’t be sorry, its a big deal. Its good everyone is safe.
They were showing a lot boats on I-45 the other night, maybe its there?
I have an old fashion that doesn’t need batteries or electricity because our power often goes out during big summer storms.
I have been able to get text messages to and from Houston in the past couple days but not any calls, you might try that.
Emm– :-)
Susan–I was wondering the same thing about I-45. It will be interesting to find out where the boat ended up. On another subject, have you heard from Laurie? I know she went to her parents’ house, but it can’t be good that she’s not posted anything on her blog in all these days.
I know it must be so difficult to be so far away and waiting for news. I am thinking good thoughts for you!
oops I don’t see my comment that I thought I left this morning. I was just saying that these are people that have been so settled and at a certain age, the stress must be even harder to deal with.
Pamela–Thank you…
Christine–It’s true.
