Don’t you hate it when you talk about so many random things in your post that you can’t think of a good title?

I am on a new computer today. This weekend (while I was sick), I did a massive backup of my laptop to my external drive… and then I put my poor laptop out to pasture.

So for now, I will be using the desktop Mr. DJ bought last month when our music studio computer died. I am going to spend some time organizing my Krakow photos today, so I hope to do some Poland posts this week. Finally!!
By the way, did you ever notice how sloooooooowly time goes when you’re sick? Despite feeling poorly, I did have a nice quiet weekend with my family.
And no, we didn’t have any trick-or-treaters for Halloween, which was just as well because I was feeling pretty lousy and was asleep by 9 PM. But! Guy Fawkes Day is coming up on November 5. We have been hearing fireworks almost every night for the last three weeks. You can buy them easily at Tesco or the local plant store. There is even a large (temporary) fireworks storefront on “high street” in our little town. Then, apparently, you can shoot them off in your backyard. So different from the States, eh? And here’s a question for the locals, do kids really come round asking for a “penny for the guy” on Guy Fawkes Day? If yes, then I really need to do a bit of scrounging around for change.
One last thing… Facebook is evil and addicting. Just kidding! Well, not about the addicting part. Interestingly, I connected with four of my childhood friends this weekend, all of whom were important to me when I was Roxi’s age. It’s weird to think about that.

Sorry you were feeling poorly. Hope all is better now.

  2. Bee says:

I’ve never had anyone ask me for a penny for the Guy! (I did, however, once have a nurse ask me if I wanted to “spend a penny” and I had no idea what she meant!)

I only like Guy Fawkes Day if the weather is good. It is usually dripping with rain. And cold. I also think it’s strange that anyone can just have a go with fireworks. That certainly wasn’t the case in Houston! (P.S. We didn’t get any trick-or-treaters either.)

I have been resisting Facebook for awhile, as I tend to think of it as a teenager thing. Is it worth doing, do you think?

HOPE you are feeling better today. xxoo

This is my second try at Facebook and, for some reason, I’m enjoying it this time. I understand they changed some things, but I can’t remember what it was like before.

I’ve read recently that both MySpace and Facebook are now used by as many adults as teenagers. They’re both really great fun for connecting with family and old friends as well as new friends. Add my high school alumni site and Classmates.com to that and I’m covered. :)

That’s so true about time passing slowly when you’re sick. Feel better!

  5. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Kathy–I am feeling mostly better now, thank you.

Bee–Ok, I had to look up “spend a penny” haha! About facebook, I am still thinking about it. I don’t use most of the features (like I have no idea what to do if someone wants to “kidnap” me or send me a piece of flair, or whatever). Mostly it’s just nice to connect with old (and new) friends.

Laurie–Your new profile pic cracks me up everytime I see it.

    Rebecca–Thanks… nearly there!

  6. Pamela Terry and Edward says:

I’m so sorry you were ill this weekend! Edward and I hope you are much better now! Be sure and post about Guy Fawkes… we want to hear all about it!

I created a facebook account a couple of months ago, at first I was super excited because I reconnected with friends from Texas. It’s just the neatest feeling to “see” someone that remembers you when you were 12! Now, I check it about 3 times a week, I enjoy reading the status lines and it’s good for a laugh or to completely drain some time by answering movie trivia quizzes. Apparently, I’m quite the expert. ;)

  8. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Pamela–I will report if there is anything to tell. So far I haven’t heard of anything big happening around our little town.

Lucylucia–I don’t think I have full explored all of Facebook’s charms yet ;-)

  9. Christine says:

Hope you’re feeling better. A lot of my friends are wary of Facebook, I think it’s the age group (hovering around 50). Unfortunate, as my kids have hundreds of friends.

  10. Alyson (New England Living) says:

Tell Bee to do facebook! It’s totally worth it. I think of facebook as a little more grown up than myspace. Even my mom is on it for heaven’s sake! :-)

I hope you are feeling totally back to normal again. Oh, and in New England we can let off fireworks in our backyard if we want. I think in Texas you can’t because it’s so dry. We don’t have that problem up here.

    Stinks about your computer! :-(

  11. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Christine–Well, if you ever sign up, email me!

Alyson–I’m not sure it’s a good idea to introduce a friend to such an addicting thing ;-)

  12. Barrie says:

I think where you live in the US determines how available fireworks are. When we visit my in-laws in Oklahoma, there are stands at the side of the road. You buy your fireworks there, then go home to set them off. So different from San Diego County!

  13. Chris says:

    GREAT post title.

By the way. I don’t join facebook or twitter or go to myspace because I would have to leave my job.

But hopefully, people will still talk to me!!

  14. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Barrie–I think you’re right. In Texas, we could drive outside of city limits and buy fireworks, but I’m not sure where one could shoot ‘em off.

Chris–There’s nothing wrong with “good old fashioned” email and blog comments :-)

  15. Anonymous says:

I guess that I’ll have to join Facebook eventually…people are starting to talk! Mimsy

  16. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Mimsy–What are they talking about?! BTW, I’ve connected with a bunch of “our mutual friends” on Facebook, including our friend in Scotland. If you decide to join, look me up, eh?
