Morning cup of coffee

An ancient-looking macchinetta or stove top espresso maker in our Krakow flat.
Have you ever used one of these stove top espresso makers? Our flat provided us with this macchinetta and a French coffee press. Since I had never used a stove top maker before, I thought I’d give it a try. It makes delicious, full-bodied coffee. Granted, I like my coffee pretty strong (with milk), so I know it’s not for everyone. However, even though the grounds we had in Poland weren’t my usual roast, the coffee was wonderfully smooth. I can only imagine what the coffee might be like with some nice beans.
I really should get one of these.
Also, I have heard some good things about the AeroPress Coffee Maker.

My sister-in-law, a coffee fiend, swears by those funny things. My husband gave her a fancy Nespresso coffee maker for her 40th birthday this year and she handed it back!
BTW, that picture is lovely . . . and somehow mysterious.
Bee–Really? How funny! I wonder if it might be psychological more than anything. There is something charmingly old fashioned and European about making coffee in that little pot. Kind of like making tea with a kettle instead of in a microwave (the horrors!).
We used to have one of those funny coffee pots and it kept boiling all over the cooker and making a mess so we threw it away
There’s no answer to that!
I love that picture, I had to read the caption right away to figure out what was going on.
We use naturally decaffeinated coffee these days.
Yes, and I enjoy it. It makes a fairly strong brew, which is what I like. (Black – no cream, no sugar)
I use this on the weekend, and it is my current favorite, but I lust for one of these. It is supposed to be the absolute best. All the richness of a press without the sediment.
It’s true, I’m a huge coffee geek.
Oh, and Bee is right the photo is awesome. (The 50?)
Christine–Decaf is so much better these days, isn’t it? You know what I miss here? Flavoured coffee! I will be picking up many, many pounds worth when I go to Texas next month.
BSR–Ooooooo. That second one is very fine! I used my 28-105 for that shot. Can you believe I actually remembered to bring my 50, hauled it around Krakaow, but NEVER USED IT? It was just so awkward since we were rushing around from one place to the next. Then it rained and switching lenses was out of the question. Heck, using my camera was out of the question. I need to be more diligent with my 50, though. And I really should find a good travel tri-pod.I am thinking about the Joby Gorillapod.
I’m Mormon, so I don’t drink coffee, but I love the smell. I also love coffee flavored candies. Yummy!
We had one like this in Italy, and Morocco and LA – in fact for all of our 35 years together.
R. loves coffee. I never drink it.
Go to Merisi in Vienna for to die for coffeehouse pictures…..and hot choc too.
oh, man, do I want to try one of these. I am always looking for a great cup of coffee.
Ohhh, I love that tripod!
Alyson – Is decaf allowed?
No, no decaf, but contrary to popular belief we do drink coke. :-)
I have the first one Sir Robin showed, and I love it. I also have a small one-cup stove-top espresso maker like your picture. And I have a Bodum milk frother.
Hi– I just discovered your blog and have really enjoyed perusing it! We are American expats in Holland (Leiden), but I work in The Hague. It’s always fun to read about my “home” from a visitor’s perspective!
I love the picture! Never tried one of those espresso makers or the french press…i have always heard the coffee is very good… i saw one like your pic in T.J. Maxx the other day…should have picked it up!
Alyson–Ok, well then, trust me on this, it’s one good cup of coffee!
Elizabeth–Your Robert has excellent taste. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to discover this little coffee pot. Thanks for the tip about Merisi’s blog, by the way!
Chris–If I could, I’d invite you over for a cup–and a slice of cake! :-)
BSR–Do you HAVE one?! If yes, does it work for you? One of the things that I would have a hard time adjusting to is it’s short stature, but yes, I know that’s why it has claws. I guess it might make me a little more creative, trying to find out where to attach the thing!
P-D–Oh dear, you probably shouldn’t have told me about the milk frother.
Katie–Hi! I’m so glad you stopped by :-) Well, I’ve got a huge crush on The Hague, in case you couldn’t tell. Do you enjoy living there? And do you speak Dutch?
Ivy–If it’s still there next time you go (and you like esspresso), then it’s meant for you ;-) Thanks so much for commenting!
Japra –
No, I’d never seen it until I followed your link, but I love it!!
I can think of lots of times I could have used it.
I really want a collapsible monopod.
Japra… get a gorrillapod. I have one and they’re great. You can wrap the legs around things, adjust the legs and generally make it do what you want. It’s perfect for my tiny Brownie camera.
P-D–It looks awesome! And I’m glad to hear from a satisfied customer. :-)
