Tin of Tomatillos

Howdy

I thought you’d like to see

what my “catering-size” tin

of tomatillos looked like.

The fruits ranged from one inch

to two and a half inches

and felt

like leathery water balloons,

in a way.

When I cut them open,

the insides oozed out.

It was kind of gross*.

Anyway,

I have enough tomatillos here

six more times.

But maybe, I’ll try making

instead.

That is,

 if I can find

green tomatoes.
It is very beautiful out today. I wish I had time to go into London.
*And speaking of gross… I just read in the Wikipedia article that tomatillos have a “distinctive, some would say foot-like odor”.  Hmm. I didn’t detect that, but maybe it was because mine were canned?

please let me know if you make more green chili and pork….that would be worth a trip across the pond!

  2. Brave Sir Robin says:

    Foot odor?

Never noticed that before, and I can buy fresh pretty much year round.

  3. Moannie says:

Can’t say I’ve seen any of those canned Tomatillos around my way. I use, oh, what are they called…Pepperdines…something like that. They are sweet and just a bit hot, just right for a chicken casserole.

  4. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Bee Shay–Well, it *was* good… haha! Thanks for stopping by today.

BSR–I know, I’ve never heard that before. So next time you’re cooking with the fresh ones, can you give it a whiff and report back? Now I’m curious! Or perhaps it’s best not to dwell too much on this one fact ;-)

Moannie–I ordered that giant tin from Cool Chili Co. I hadn’t seen them anywhere either. Is a pepperdine a pepper? I am not sure I’ve ever seen those.

  5. Emm says:

I am sure I know of the odour they are referring to but I would say it is more of a clean foot odour or a new tennis shoe odour.

  6. Alyson (New England Living) says:

So cool! You are my domestic hero!

  7. Christine says:

I’ve never had tomatillos, something new for me. They look interesting.

  8. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Emm–Have you cooked with tomatillos before? And really more importantly, have you found them here in the UK? Let me guess… Borough Market.

Alyson–Well, maybe Goddess of the Kitchen.

Christine–I’ve never cooked with them before, though I’ve eaten them lots of times back home. If you’ve had enchiladas verdes or a green salsa, it is pretty likely you’ve had tomatillos. Too bad I can’t invite you over for dinner!

  9. Bee says:

    Those are some Texas-sized tomatillos!

  10. Sarah Laurence says:

You are a Texan in England and a poet too! How funny. I’m glad to hear the weather is cooperating for a change. Interesting tour below too.

  11. Pigtown-Design says:

    can you freeze them?

  12. Laurie says:

    Mmmmmmmmm…Ninfas.

  13. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

    Bee–Hecho in Mexico, no less.

    Sarah–And another beautiful day today.

P-D–That’s exactly what I did. I froze them in little batches so I can just take out what I need.

    Laurie–Mmmm. I know!

  14. Emm says:

No – I honestly only started cooking (for the first time since school) in March when my brother moved in with us. He has diabetes and so now I make sure I do cook and I come up with healthy options at least 3 times a week. Thankfully I don’t have to cook every night – Stephen is an absolutely gifted cook and my brother actully enjoys it so we rotate.

Did you look in The Spice Shop during your travels to Notting Hill?

  15. Barbara Blundell says:

Hi Japra Talking food. Can you help please ? Have come across a Texan recipe for oatmeal bread that I would like to try. Now the problem is it lists “2 cups oats (Not the instant kind ) “Does that mean porage oats or oatmeal which is quite different ? The result sounds quite delicious

  16. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Emm–Yes, I did! Fabulous store!! And I am so happy to know they have an online store as well. Maybe one day you can post your favourite South African recipe? I’d love to try it!

Barbara–Oatmeal in the States usually means rolled oats… the flat kind. Does that help? My friend Bee makes an oatmeal bread. Here’s the recipe she recommended to me.

  17. Emm says:

Yeah – I really should get around to making some South African recipes. Bobotie(be-boo-er-tea) is my favourite.

  18. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Emm–That looks delicious! I think I will try making it this weekend :-)

  19. Barbara Blundell says:

Many thanks that’s very helpful. That’s the recipe I’ve already printed off. Will have a go using rolled oats-probably try half quantities to start !

  20. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Barbara–Good luck! And pretty please post a picture when you’re done?

  21. Chris says:

    How GORGEOUS are these?!?

  22. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

    Chris–I know! I love their green-ness :-)

I think the ”pepperdines” (like the university, hah-hah!) might be ”pepperoncini,” an Italian chili pepper frequently used in salads. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepperoncini
