La "Meme" chose

Okay, bad pun.

But thanks to Barrie, you have something else to read about today instead of  the post I planned to write: an extended lament for my poor postman who still was delivering mail at 5:30 last night. He said that he could barely see–the streets are very dark out here in the boonies. I felt sorry for him especially because he rides a bike (we still have paper boys on bikes too), and it was bitterly cold. Poor guy. I hope he didn’t get sick.
Anyway, back to la meme. It’s the “Seven Things” one. I did a version of this in October, but I really want that “Kick A$$ Blogger” award, so I’m going to do this again. Hey–I’m easy!
I’m lifting the rules from Barrie’s post, hope she doesn’t mind:

“Choose this award.                                   Or this award.

Or you can be like me and choose both. I’m just that way. Delightfully indecisive.

Here are the rules:
1. Do five jumping jacks
2. Balance on one foot.
3. Call a friend to say hi.
4. Take a hot bath.
5. Hug your kid or your dog.
6. Post seven (or whatever you have time for) random things about yourself.

Then, choose your award(s) and i.d. five people (or whatever) for the meme. Oh yeah, and let the people know you chose them. Oh yeah, and link back to me”

So, here are my “Seven Things”
  1. I bought a new cell phone to replace my Blackberry. It’s pink. It’s my first non-conservatively coloured phone ever. I like it a lot
  2. I would rather blog than clean the house (which I should be doing right now, of course).
  3. I cannot be bothered to be fashionable. I know this causes my mother great distress–or maybe she is resolved after all this time. Well, plus she has an almost 14 year old granddaughter who is finally interested in clothes and things like that. Maybe the fashion gene skips a generation?
  4. And sort of related to #3, I’d rather spend my money on books, art supplies, and travel than on designer clothes.
  5. Um.  Uh… Oh! I didn’t like mustard until I was in my 20′s.
  6. I got my first (non-babysitting) job at age 16 as a receptionist at a hair salon near my house. Isn’t that the perfect job for a teenage girl? I had really good hair back then. In other words, I actually took the time to make it look nice–haha. I still love the smell of Sebastian hair products, especially Shaper hair spray, which was perfect for getting that 80′s “big hair” look. Anyway, I had just come back from two weeks in England when I got that  job. I was joking around one day with a truly awful British accent. The owner thought it was cute, though, and asked me to answer the phones that way. Too funny–I almost forgot about that.
  7. When I was about 19, I thought I wanted to be a caterer. Then I talked with a friend-of-a-friend who had a small storefront catering business. She told me she worked long hours, barely saw her family and, when she went home, she often stopped at fast food restaurants for dinner. Ugh. That was the end of that idea.
So now, my least favourite part of memes is selecting seven peeps to play. Hmmm. I always pass on this because I never want to burden anyone with having to do it, but what the heck, this time I’ll do it. Plus there’s that Kick A$$ award, you know.
Tag, you’re it!
Christine (I know you just did this, but you’re tagged again! You can always save it for a day when you can’t think of anything to write–LOL)
And You! Yes, you, if you’re willing to play. Just put your URL in a comment and I’ll add you to this list.

  1. Barrie says:

I loved these! We would so be good friends in real life! Thanks for playing!

  2. Alyson (New England Living) says:

Oh, I’ll play, but it’ll probably be awhile until I actually do it. I’ll save it for a rainy day!

I recently got a pink phone too! In June. I’m so in love with it.

Love all the stuff about you. You are one cool chic!

  3. Patti says:

i would rather blog than do most anything…

  4. Bee says:

You still have good hair! And personally, I think that comfort and warmth are far more important than fashion! Best of all is being home blogging — where you can happily wear your flannel pajamas.

The catering story really snagged me. It sounds so great to work with food, and of course it’s the worst thing ever. Today I went to a Xmas lunch catered by two women . . . and I have already been to THREE of their lunches this season, so just think of how many they have done! Can you imagine having to do the big roast turkey thing almost every day? Ugh. Ugh.

  5. Pigtown-Design says:

I did catering for about six months and it was the hardest thing I ever did! Loooong hours, little pay and everyone thinks it’s such a simple and fun job.

I love your postman story. In Wales, they call everyone by what they do, especially in small villages. The man who delivered mail to the school was Gareth-the-Post, as to distinguish him from Gareth-the-Motor, or Gareth-the-Spark (auto mechanic and electrician). When you’d leave the bus, you’d say “Ta, Driver”.

  6. Christine says:

great to learn more about you. I’m also blogging instead of house cleaning…the fashion gene skipped me too! stay tuned for my meme.

  8. Chris says:

Okay, I have been tagged twice in the last week and I’ve been too busy to do the first one yet! But I’m honored. So, I’m going to do two of them in succession, tomorrow.

I don’t really know how this thing works. So if I make a mistake, well…

    not a big surprise…

  9. Akelamalu says:

Love the seven things about you! :)

  10. lucylucia says:

JAPRA – it was harder than I thought to come up with 7 things! You know, I’m not much of a fashion plate myself. I do care about my surroundings though – so if it was between a new pillow for the living room and a new sweater the pillow would easily win out!

  11. Elizabeth says:

Glad you enjoyed having big hair!
    A fun memory.

  12. Laurie says:

I’m going to do it and my seven will be my version of your seven. Confused?

  13. Barbara Blundell says:

    Hi Japra,
Done the first four, not having a child or a pet handy had to use a knitted sheep for no 5. Hope this is O.K.
I was tagged in Oct and revealed all then so have no more secrets to divulge but thanks for asking

P.S.Cant find the origin of the word “meme”

  14. david mcmahon says:

Every cellphone I’ve had has been silver or black.

  15. Expat mum says:

We have so much in commom, and not.
-I have a pink phone and am just about to get something like a Blackberry.
    - Living in the States (yet growing up with morning post) if my mail comes at 5.30pm that’s a bloody miracle.
    - The fashion gene has skipped a generation too. I have a beautiful, well-groomed mother and a tall skinny teenager who looks good in a plastic bag. I’m sitting here in jeans and a baggy rugby shirt!
    - I can sew a bit and therefore can’t bear spending a lot of money on hugely marked up clothes. However, when you go to the far end of high fashion, I can appreciate how beautifully the clothes are made, but still can’t bring myself to lay the money down.
OK, now I’ll take the hot bath!

  16. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Barrie–It was fun. And of course, I adored your intriguing seven!

Alyson–Can’t wait to hear yours! You know, I thought having a pink phone would help me find it easier… so far, it hasn’t worked ;-)

    Patti–Ah, a kindred spirit!

Bee–Isn’t that crazy about being a caterer? But I loved (still love) making fussy food. Everyday cooking wasn’t my thing until we moved to England. Still, I am not sure I would have lasted in the catering business. I have little patience to make the same thing over and over again. PS I think I would gag if I had to make roast turkey every day!

P-D–There are many charming, old-fashioned things that I love about this country! I think it is funny that often I will be called “Mrs. DJ” instead of my first name. As for your catering stint, I am so glad I didn’t go down that path! I think I probably would have enjoyed it for a very short time, though.

Christine–Can’t wait to learn even more about you :-)

Chris–I am sure your post will be funny and charming as usual!

Akelamalu–I wanted to tag you, but since we’re relatively new friends, I wasn’t sure if this was your cup of tea. Please feel free to play along if you like!

Lucy Lucia–Oh, goody! I’ll be right over in a sec to read your seven. I agree that is hard to think of these “random things”…

Elizabeth–I am wondering if Big Hair will make a comeback… Hahaha!

    Laurie–Actually, I got that ;-)

Barbara–You are too funny! Here’s what I found about the origins of “meme”.

David–Just about every single thing I have is black! The pink phone is an anomaly.

Expat Mum–I have to agree with your last one. I certainly can appreciate Haute Couture, but seeing as one dress could pay for my child’s entire college career, I guess I’ll have to pass on the new frock. :-)

  17. Wonderful web page, I recently came across it and I’m already a fan. I recently got rid of thirty pounds in 30 days, and I want to share my weight loss success with as many people as possible.
