Tuesday Ramblings

This photo has nothing to do with today’s post. I just forgot to post it yesterday. As we were walking toward Leister Square on Saturday, we saw this group of police hurrying toward the Gaza rally in Trafalgar Square. Apparently some protesters broke the windows of a nearby Starbucks. You just never know what you’ll see in London.
A friend of a friend and her family were in the neighborhood yesterday. They are exploring the possibility of expating here for a couple of years. Anyway, this Texan family and I spent a short while visiting yesterday over a late lunch. I wish them the very best! There is so much to think about when pondering the expat question.
Today I need to do laundry, tidy up the house, make some art. But all I feel like doing is snuggling in with a book. Speaking of books, I forgot to include these titles in my recently read list:
And a few young adult novels (I try to keep up with what Roxi is reading):
I’ve more books on order. And I’ve decided I need to keep a book journal or some sort of list in one place. I find many wonderful book recommendations on other people’s blogs (yours!) and write them down in my everyday journal only to have them buried in my ramblings. Maybe just a single list next to computer somewhere would work.
In Roxi news, she received her Spring semester schedule yesterday. She’s signed up for Art (mandatory–she’d rather do Drama again since they’re focusing on comedy aka Monty Python!!) and Health (also mandatory). This is 8th grade health class, ladies and gentleman. You know what that means!
About the Author: JaPRA is an expat Texan living in England with her husband (Mr. DJ), their 17-year old daughter (Roxi), and their dog Trudy.

Heh. I just add items to my ever-expanding to-read list on Goodreads. They have a cool pulig-in where you can add items from the Amazon page and I see I added City of Bones back in December already!! :o)
Did you enjoy Wife in the North? I had not heard of it before but I’ve added it anyway.
Oh, how many times the past 8 years have I pondered becoming an expat…
A book journal is a great idea! It serves as remembrance, but it also clarifies your reading goals, it allows you to reflect upon what you’ve read and what it did or didn’t do for you. I think it’s a great journal idea, and thanks for that.
Happy Inauguration day!
interesting that Art is mandatory.
I’m also watching the inauguration along with the rest of the world!
I saw an old book journal in the used/rare bookstore the other day. It was from the 20s. It was so interesting, but I was already spending a ton of money on other books. However, my mind keeps going back to that book. I must go back and buy it!
8th grade health class? Yikes!
I bought a little “Books to Check Out” binder years ago . . . and it has finally found its purpose! Sitting by my computer so that I can jot down the book recommendations I get from my favorite blogs!
Actually, it seems pretty late to be starting the Sex Ed thing. Don’t they usually do that in 5th grade?
Sounds like a time of changes.
Book journal sounds an excellent idea.
Love the picture and the sense of hurrying the blurry yellow jackets gives.
But I’m eager to read your thoughts on the inauguration! Did you watch it with other ex-pats or by yourself? Favorite moments? Didn’t you love Michelle’s dress? I did!
Emm–I did like Wife in the North. She definitely lives in a more rural place than us, but I could relate to some of her feelings. She has a blog: http://www.wifeinthenorth.com/
Chris–Happy Inaguration day to you too (well, a day late)! About the book journal–I try not to keep separate journals because it splits my attention and then nothing gets written down! However, I think I will keep a running list near my computer. I used to use Good Reads to track my books, but for some reason, I couldn’t keep up with that. And about being an expat, well, it ROCKS! But sometimes one gets lonely for home.
Christine–Yes! Art has to be mandatory. It’s the only way I can get back into groove.
Alyson–You must go back! Wow, was it handwritten or a printing of someone’s journal? And yeah, 8th greade health. Just you wait, my friend.
Bee–The binder is such a good idea! And Roxi did have health class in 4th and 5th grade to talk about body changes, health in 7th to talk about eating disorders, and 8th for sex ed. It sounds like the teacher is really great and has the kids actaully talking in class. Very healthy, I think.
Elizabeth–Yes, indeed!
Fantastic Forrest–My daughter and I watched the inauguration on the internet (it was her history homework)! It was such a strange feeling to watch it here in England. It was like watching the moon landing or something like that. Very dreamlike.
Cool – I think I’ll try read her book then!
Cool photo even if a crime. Violent protest against Starbucks?
I’ve been reading more YA with my daughter too. It’s good to get recommendations. I’m toying with the idea of writing a YA book.
I keep a list of books to read on my computer. I like your book journal idea.
Emm–I hope you like it :-)
Sarah–My daughter loves fantasy. These books are a step up in maturity for her. The main characters are about 16… and a bit more worldly than I would like. Still, I would rather her read these books now while we still have a speaking relationship–LOL! Of the three, I enjoyed “Wicked Lovely” best. I can’t wait to read your books!!!!!! And I think you would write a wonderful, thoughtful YA novel.
