Q: What happens when cold air from Siberia hits warm, moist air from France?

SNOW Day in England!
It started snowing last night about 8 PM. When Mr. DJ left for the airport this morning at 4:45 AM, there was quite a nice blanket of the stuff already on the ground. He was supposed to take off at 7:00, but the flight was cancelled. He was thinking of going into town, but there weren’t any trains into London and the wait for a taxi was two hours at least. Luckily he was clear headed enough to call our local taxi service, who was able to pick him up within 15 minutes. So now he’s home on a conference call (the meeting he was supposed to fly out for!).
Roxi’s school declared a snow day about 6:00 this morning. It’s our first snow day ever!
I think we’ve gotten about six inches of snow so far. Mr. DJ said we’re supposed to get 10-12 inches total. That would be amazing. This is the most snow we’ve seen in England since we moved here nearly two years ago.
Tomorrow we’re supposed to have sun, but there is more snow predicted for later this week.

That pictures is amazing – picture postcard perfect. My sister told me it was freezing. Enjoy and stay warm!
Beautiful! I like how you do your photos with your name at the bottom now. I also like how different your corner of London looks from my corner of London! Your corner looks very rustic and very English.
Pretty!!!
Lilly–We had a bit of a break from the snow for a few hours, but it’s started up again. I wonder if we’ll be snowed in again tomorrow? Does it snow very much up where your sister lives? I bet she is looking forward to thawing out in Australia! I miss the sun.
Emm–It is amazingly rural where I live! It’s still considered “commuter belt” but there are horses in a field less than a minute away. They are beautifully shaggy right now.
Rebecca–Yes, it is! And somehow the snow makes the cold better.
I’ve been thinking about you all morning . . . and wanting to chortle into your ear: SNOW!
Isn’t it thrilling? We’ve played in it all morning and now we are tucked up with hot coffee at our computers. (Sigmund’s morning was remarkably similar to Mr. DJ’s – but not cancelled plane!)
WOW! It snowed in Wales along the coast once when I was there and it was just magical!
You have the best photos! I miss being able to say “a blanket of snow.”
Enjoy your snow day (and Roxi too)! I can see why Mr DJ’s flight was cancelled, that sounds like a lot of snow.
We have had an inch or two here but it is looking tatty already. Unbelievably I fell taking Milou for his poo walk, on slush, felt like such an old woman. Good job my bottom is well padded.
Makes so embarrassed that the country grinds to a halt over a bit of snow…knowing what it is like in Canada, and from other bloggers in REALLY snowy places.
Keep warm.
Lovely picture!
I’ve tagged you. Come see! x
Bee–It is beautiful! Roxi is so thrilled and keeps saying, “I can’t believe I live here!” What fun she and your youngest would have had frolicking in the snow :)
PD–It really is magical. The snow is so lovely, fluffy, and fresh!
Barrie–Ah yes, but you can rub it in about the sun and warmth. AND the beach!
Christine–Unfortunately, Mr. DJ left on the afternoon Eurostar, so he didn’t get to hang out with us very long. Too bad because this snow is too much fun.
Moannie–Oh my, I hope you are alright! The roads did feel slippery where it was a bit mushy. I am glad they cancelled school. I was DREADING driving in the snow!
Audrey–Thanks! Did you get a lot of snow?
Wasn’t it fun!
Gotta love how the whole country shuts down.
Put on the fire and make some hot chocolate.
It’s been snowing here all day and more to come. I’m hoping for a phone call in the morning to say my school is shut! :)
My Ball & Chain landed in London (from Chicago) this morning. Everything is cancelled. Sadly it's a bit too far for him to come home, so he's just waiting it out.
Glad to know that you all are living in a postcard…it’s funny how ”a blanket of snow” sounds toasty and warm. Mimsy
That is awesome! I LOVE snow days.
Have fun on your first snow day ever!
Your snow is big news over here, too! Gorgeous.
I had to check your blog after hearing about it on the news. My kids are bummed to have missed the biggest snowfall in history. How exciting!
Is jealousy a sin??
How beautiful. We had an unusual snowfall this December and the kids enjoyed a few snow days off from school. I love those. Extra special fun times. They’ve never been able to play in it or build snowmen here in the lower elevations. Although Mt. Hood is covered virtually year round, our climate in the valley is really mild. What a treat!
A Modern Mother–Oh, how I wish we had a fireplace. Instead, I stuck my head outside every now and again for a good whiff of wood smoke and snow.
Akelamalu–I wonder if you had the day off today too. Roxi's school decided no school early on, so we knew we could enjoy a good lie in this morning.
Expat Mum–I hope B&C didn't have to wait too long! Mr. DJ took the Eurostar to the continent and said there wasn't any catering on the train. Hope Heathrow had enough food for all of those poor, stranded souls.
Mimsy–I don't know why, but it doesn't seem as cold with the snow. Maybe its beauty takes my mind off the cold!
Alyson–It is an unexpected treat! though I can tell Roxi is starting to go a bit stir crazy today (day #2). We went out to play, but I think she misses her friends and keeping busy.
Laurie–I don't know if that is embarrassing or cool. I'm going with cool.
Sarah–Your kids are so funny! You have a lot of beautiful snow in Maine! But yes, I suppose I know what they mean. Plus we got two snow days out of the deal.
Pamela–I hope not, dear!
Fantastic Forrest–It sounds like you live in an ideal area. Snow within driving (and admiring) distance but mild-ish temps most of the time. Sounds good to me!
What a pretty picture! I miss the snow…
