A week of answers…

Roxi did not get into the music school. In a way, I am glad about this because if she had, it would have made it that much harder to leave London if that is what we are supposed to do. Also, after reviewing the school’s curriculum, it seemed like it wouldn’t have been a good fit anyway. So, a little disappointed about this, but not heartbroken.

Mr. DJ, Roxi and I finally sat down this weekend to talk at length about the possibility of moving to The Netherlands. The answer? Six thumbs up. So Mr. DJ is submitting the paperwork for all of this. There is still a chance that we might not go, but right now we’re all excited about moving.
I emailed the school in The Netherlands this AM to see if they received all the paperwork they need from us. They said they’d be making their decision this week. Fingers and toes crossed about this one.
I went into Town to meet a friend today. More tomorrow.
Yesterday, I had on shorts and a t-shirt (granted I was inside sorting through closets). Today, it’s cold and raining.

    Hi Japra,
There must be something better for Roxi round the corner !
If you decide on the Netherlands look forward to interesting travelogues as haven’t seen much of it

  2. Cynthia says:

Yes, I agree with Barbara. Sometimes things want to complicate themselves in a different way…or rather, going to the Netherlands will bring its own opportunities. Still, if Roxi is moving toward music, nothing will stop her. She is a confident girl. As you said, you have to find the right school (time/place) match.
    xx <3

  3. Bee says:

I’m sorry for Roxi’s disappointment, but it definitely feels like this falls in the “working out for the best” category since you all want to move to The Hague.

Thanks for today. I really enjoyed our talk. xx

  4. Kathy Amen says:

Good luck as plans develop. What an odd feeling it must be, not knowing for sure what country you’ll be living in this fall!

  5. Julia says:

    Good things about The Netherlands…

    1.Cheap wooden clogs
2.You could get a Volvo straight from the factory (maybe they have an outlet store where you can get them at a discount).
3.You get to say The Netherlands over and over again.
4.As a brunette, I’d like to go because I’d maybe stand out amongst all those blondes.
    5.Cool flags.

Okay, obviously, I don’t know a lot about the Netherlands.

Sorry about the school thing – my attitude is, if they’re meant to go, they’ll get in (but we’ll see how I feel in four weeks).

  6. Alyson (New England Living) says:

Sorry about the disappointment, but all will work out in the end. Seems like you all came to terms with that. The move sounds exciting! How long will you be there?

  7. Akelamalu says:

Aw shame about the music school but it could have scuppered your plans for the Netherlands.

It’s been really cold here today – what the hell is going on with the weather? :0

  8. Pamela Terry and Edward says:

What a wonderful childhood for Roxi to have! London, Texas and The Netherlands!! A sublime way to grow up!

  9. lucylucia says:

I agree with Pamela Terry. How wonderful to be faced with these choices! Roxi is going to have a wealth of experiences to “add to her art”!

  10. Katie Flanagan says:

Great about going ahead with the move! I’d love to have a cup of coffee with you if you come over to case things out any time soon!

  11. Fantastic Forrest says:

Geez, this is extremely annoying. All these people stole what I was going to say to you and Roxi and Mr. DJ.

It is totally pathetic that they can’t come up with their own comments.

    Humph.

It must have been tough to have to write that bit of news; however, having been through a number of (inexplicable)disappointments and (not surprising) successes with my own two children, I can say that it’s too bad, but likely for the best. Chalk up another check mark for experience– and remember what that wonderful pianist said to her at the audition. That’s a good thing to print and hang on the wall! Love, Mimsy

  13. Fantastic Forrest says:

Aha! I know. I will thwart the copycats by communicating with you in Dutch. You can use Babel fish to translate. Am I smart or what?

    Roxi,
Waar het één deursluiten, een andere opent.

    I am so clever.

  14. Fantastic Forrest says:

I forgot – I need to give all of you a good comment. How’s this?

In the words of Rosalia de Castro,

“I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.”

  15. Emm says:

Aaaw, sorry about the music school. I do think it was just the first step in a string of exciting opportunities though.

But very exciting about The Netherlands!

I am such a geek – I am pleased as punch that I understood what Forrest said without needing babelfish. Maybe my Afrikaans will come in handy one day!

  16. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

    Barbara–Thanks :-)

Cynthia–We were actually relieved by this decision. I think that is how we knew it was the right one!

Bee–Absolutely! I totally believe in things working out for the best. I loved our time together yesterday too. It was great to see you again. XO

Kathy–It is odd. And exciting! And liberating in a way too.

Julia–You’re funny! And our kids have lots of opportunities. Sometimes you just have to look a bit harder.

Alyson–It is interesting to be in this position of, I wouldn’t call it uncaring, but maybe looking further ahead? Anyway, if we go, we’ll probably be there 1-2 years.

Akelamalu–You taught me a new word today: “scuppered”. Ah yes, bad weather yesterday, but at least we have blue skies and sun today. Just a bit on the chilly side. That’s ok by me!

Pamela–We are so lucky that Roxi is flexible and enthusiastic about these things. And yes, lucky, lucky girl. And lucky me!!

Lucy Lucia–Yes, plus she has her drama exam this weekend and is the only one not keeling over from nerves ;-)

Katie–I’ll drop you an email if we’re in the area! I’d love to meet you as well.

Fantastic Forrest–You are cracking me up. Love the Dutch! And I think I am going to copy de Castro’s words into my journal. XO

Mimsy–Believe it or not, it wasn’t tough at all. I think we knew it wasn’t right the moment we got to the school. BUT of course it would have been the cherry on top if she had gotten in. Everything happens for a reason :-)

Emm–I am totally envious of your Dutch skillage (teen talk–hee hee)!

  17. Moannie says:

My memories of Holland…clean, so clean, The Art, Rembrant…soused herring by the canals…bicycles…Feather beds and duvets, crisp lace, barges, Jazz, and I was only there for two nights in the fifties. Hope it hasn’t changed, you will love it. Good luck.

    Running the AC here . . . .

    :(

  19. Anne says:

Sorry to hear that she didn’t get in, but I’m glad that things seem to be working out for the best! How lovely of the accompanist to be so positive and encouraging.

  20. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Moannie–I don’t think things have changed so much. It is such a beautiful country. And you are right! Very clean. I know we’ll love it if we move.

Anonymous Friend–Oh dear. Well, there were a couple of days in the summer when we wanted central AC ;-) And I would have run it on Sunday if we had it.

Anne–I know, she was really sweet. Very encouraging.

  21. Christine says:

sorry to hear about the music school, but good luck for the Netherlands school..with her marks, shouldn’t be a problem!
