April Food Day

I am making cupcakes again for one of the high school boarding students at Roxi’s school. This is the third time I’ve volunteered to do this this year. While it is a bit of work, I don’t mind it. I feel sad for these boarders, being away from their families on their birthdays. Perhaps I’m projecting a little, but you know my feelings about food and homesickness…
Anyway, making these cupcakes this morning reminded me of April Food Day. No, not FOOL’s day, FOOD Day. What is it? Well, I swiped this off of the AFD blog. I hope they won’t mind:

Everyday, the news is filled with the dire news about the current economic climate and a lot of us use the blogging community to take a break from the constant drumbeat. However, we can not ignore the fact that friends and family members, and even some blogger friends have lost their jobs because of the recession.

Former advertising executive and editor of Easy & Elegant Life, along with fundraising professional and editor of Pigtown*Design, have teamed up to create a blogger action day on April 1, 2009, which we are calling April Food Day – Bloggers Fighting Hunger. We are asking our fellow bloggers to create a post about this project and ask each of their readers to make a contribution to Feeding America (formerly Second Harvest), a national food bank with 200 member banks across the country.

People who never had a worry in the world now have to think about where their next meal is coming from. People who never would have dreamt that they would need help are now showing up at the local food banks. But when they get there, the shelves are bare. There is not enough food being donated to meet the sudden rise in demand. There is not enough money to buy the food for the food banks. There is not a general understanding that food banks need help to help fill their shelves.

Every dollar contributed provides seven meals or 10 pounds of food. A gift of $25 provides 75 meals. If we all post together and ask our readers to make a contribution on April 1, we can make a huge difference in our communities.

We would like you to help in a few easy ways:

  • Send this or a similar letter to your friends with blogs and ask them to do the same.
  • Write a post, and we can help you with copy if you need it, and publish it on March 31 or April 1, asking your readers to make a contribution to Feeding America. We will provide you with the direct link to Feeding America’s donation page.
  • Provide a link to this blog, April Food Day and we will link back to your blog and to your post about the April Food Day.

We hope that you will help us help others. We know that this is a quick turn-around, but the need is great and the time is now.

Now, I know that not all of you live in the US. But perhaps you could consider making a donation of food or money to your local food bank? Or maybe you have a neighbour or friend who you could help directly by providing them with a cooked meal or a bag of groceries? If you can’t afford a donation, a shoulder and a few comforting words can work wonders too. Or even an encouraging email or note. Compassion and caring is welcome in every country, after all. And not just on April 1st either :-)
PS In case you’re wondering, we will be making our contribution to the organization that Roxi’s school collects food for here in England. [Edited to add: I just found out the foodbank that Roxi's school donates to CLOSED! :-( So I'm making my donation to the Salvation Army UKI.]

    What an excellent idea.
I will try to get organized to do something with this tomorrow.
    I have just woken up….
Thank you for your recent comments- all of them most interesting.
I’m sure you don’t have a black thumb!

There’s a church in the next town to us which has supplies of food for people who are hungry. We tend to think in the UK that no-one goes hungry because we have a good welfare state. But things do go wrong and people do miss meals – a serious matter when there are children in the household. I work for a charity and have seen some sad cases of mothers without food for their children or clean nappies for their babies.

The Salvation Army and a few other organisations (like the local church mentioned) provide invaluable help. It makes more difference than most of us would imagine.

Elizabeth–Thank you, dear! That would be wonderful if you could. And regarding your NYC pics, what a beautiful time of year! We’ve been having weeks of lovely sun, but today has been grey, grey, grey.

Dorothy–Thank you so much for your UK view. I am glad you mentioned the Salvation Army too. If I don’t hear back from Roxi’s school by tomorrow, I will be sure to send our donation that way. I’ve done a lot of volunteer work in the US and know that every little bit does make a difference. Thanks again for your comment!

I was planning a silly post for our library blog tomorrow and will continue with that, but add this serious coda. And I can put something on my personal blog as well. I have been running short of ideas lately, so thanks for the inspiration!

Akelamalu–The beauty of blogging and blogging friendships is we all inspire one another. In this case it was Pigtown Design who inspired me (and the cupcakes–hee hee). It’s nice to use our blogs to spread happiness, isn’t it? Some days you just need a happy jolt. That is why I like to visit your blog :-)

Kathy–Are you going to blog about the P+P Zombies on your library blog? Haha! Thanks for spreading the word about April Food Day. I know we are all thinking about stuff like this, especially now. But sometimes it’s nice to have a gentle reminder to do something about it :-)
