First Spring walk through the woods

We took a walk in Windsor Great Park on Sunday. It was a little cool, and there wasn’t much in bloom yet (only a few daffodils). Still, we had two lovely hours in the fresh air and sunshine. As soon as we got into the car, however, it started to sprinkle. And as soon as we got home, it poured! By that time, we were snug in our conservatory with steaming bowls of baked potato soup.
It was a little bit sad walking through the woods this time. In my own way, I’ve started saying goodbye to this part of England. We can still come and visit once we move into Central , but it won’t be as easy or as quick. Luckily, there are plenty of beautiful parks in town.

We’ve had many beautiful Spring mornings lately. It does usually rain in the afternoon, though.

We love Great Park. I hope we can manage to do some more walks before we move.

bridge1See, isn’t it pretty here? And when the flowers start to bloom, it smells so good too. Like dryer sheets.

For HP fans, scenes from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire were filmed near here. I could picture HP and walking through this wood to get to Hagrid’s hut.

Here’s what I like to do on these walks: take too many photos of moss-covered stumps. I think I took a thousand photos of stumps.

And at least a few hundred of interesting fungi on fallen logs.

And speaking of fallen logs, Mr. DJ and Roxi had fun crossing a ditch atop this one.

Where was ? In the water, of course. She was oblivious to the cold. She jumped right in at the very first opportunity. Unfortunately for us, she found a rather mucky pond. She smelled REALLY BAD after this wade. At some point, I was afraid she was stuck in that mud and we would have to fish her out. You should have heard all the people around us when jumped in here and saw it was muddy… sympathetic groans!

Here she is. Filthy.

And because I haven’t indulged in tongue photos in a while…

Here

are

a

few.

    ♥ Trudy is so lovely!!!

This is a really nice post. It reminds me that I must go on another walk before everything turns green and colourful. I mean, I adore the colours but I find the autumn and winter colours so calming.

Um, is that bare feet I saw up there? *shudder*

  2. Pigtown-Design says:

Are there some big gardens there, too? Saville Gardens?

Please tell me that Roxi wasn’t in bare feet!!!

My walks are decidedly less picturesque.

    :(

The photo of the moss covered stumps is so nice – it reminds me of those 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles pictures.

The colors are so intense, I can almost smell the moss and the dew.

    Wonderful post.

  4. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Emm–Trudy is a sweetie, a good sport and a good girl :-) Yes, that is Roxi crossing the ditch barefoot, but she did have on her sparkly red sneakers for the rest of the walk.

Pigtown-Design–Valley Garden is huge and so beautiful in April. Seville is wonderful year round, but also best flower wise in March/April.

Anonymous Friend–It was so beautiful. The grass is soft too, which is a nice change from Texas. Oh, and no fire ants!

  5. Bee says:

Does Trudy have an unusually large tongue? It seems very exuberant. I love the picture of her with muddy legs. She needs some waders or wellies!

I also really like the picture of Roxi.

I’m impatient for spring now. I want it to be warmer than it is. We went to Oxford on Sunday and got rained on repeatedly.

Being an expat means that change (and nostalgia for what you lose) happens in double-time. Your words about the park reminded me of this.

    Truuuuuuuuuudy!!!

  7. Christine says:

Trudy looks like a happy camper! What a lovely walk, thanks for sharing..it seems so quiet and peaceful, no crowds.

  8. Chris says:

You know I love me some Trudy! Look at her running! When the dog gets into something icky, it’s so ICKY!!

Thank you for these park pictures. I make a point of visiting local parks when I travel. This one looks so pretty. Magical!

  9. Akelamalu says:

You got some great shots of the park! I love the photos of Trudy and her tongue. LOL

  10. Pamela Terry and Edward says:

What a glorious park! And what fun Trudy is having. We spent Saturday in the park ourselves, enjoying all the new green moss. Edward however, has no interest whatsoever in water, and avoided the lake with ease! The squirrels were another matter!

  11. Expat mum says:

Great photos, but there are some great parks and great walks in London. That’s what I miss in Chicago. We have great places to walk (when it’s above freezing) like the lake front and Lincoln Park, but no great big heathy places. And it’s all flat.

  12. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Bee-Trudy has such a big smile that her tongue can’t help but loll out ;-) And I know what you mean about Spring! We keep getting these beautiful days and then FROST in the AM. I’m so confused! As for being an Expat, I think you’re right. It’s easy to be content and think we’ll be here indefinitely, but the truth is, change is in the wind…

Laurie– :-) I thought you might like this post!

Chris–I like your travel philosophy. We like to get in a bit of walking on all of our trips too.

Akelamulu–Thank you! I love to take Trudy photos when she’s running around like that. She’s so happy here :-)

Pamela–Trudy has a great interest in squirrels too. There aren’t a lot (any?) in the park, though. Lots of birds, but Trudy ignores them. It’s funny! She also has a great interest in Foxes. But not mole hills.

Expat Mum–We are counting on the big parks in town. I hope there are places we can have Trudy off leash!

  13. Ash says:

What a lovely place to walk!! My favorite is the “Fungi on Log” photo….Thats amazing – nice light, tones and texture!

  14. Anonymous says:

Great photos – amazing how different the park looks in full color (I love links!). So I guess the South didn’t invent azaleas? Hmmm…

  15. Fantastic Forrest says:

What a wonderful walk! And how uplifting the blue sky photo is. Yesterday it was so grey here. I think I will put this photo on my desktop to keep from sinking into gloom. :-)

As for your thousand photos of stumps, I sense a best-selling coffee table book there…especially if you throw in a few fungi!

  16. lucylucia says:

What a wonderful walk! JAPRA – I’m looking forward to reading about your move to city, but I sure will miss seeing these gorgeous photos of the woods!!

  17. Sarah Laurence says:

Thanks for sharing your spring morning – I can see the bounce in Trudy’s step. My dog would be in the stinky bog with Trudy if she could.

My favorite photo is the one of Roxi – even without her top half, her character shines through.

It must be so hard to move away from this natural beauty, but I’m sure you’ll enjoy London too.

  18. vicki archer says:

What a wonderful walk – I haven’t been there but I would love to one day – the park looks very beautiful. xv

  19. A Cuban In London says:

What a fantastic post! And I loved the images. For some reason, my favourite was the one where someone (you maybe?) is walking on that log barefoot. It conveys a sense of freedom and abandon hard to to explain with words.

    Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  20. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Ash–Thank you, it is one of my favourites too.

Julia–It is a sight to see, that is for sure. Some of the bushes are as big as a house.

Fantastic Forrest–LOL! That is a funny idea for a photo book. Hmmm. apparently Beatrix Potter was obsessed with fungi. I guess I’m in good company.

Lucy Lucia–Luckily there are some beautiful parks in Town. But yeah, nothing beats a lovely walk through the woods.

Sarah–Yay for Stella! I am glad to hear it.

Vicki–Windsor Great Park is huge. You can walk all the way to the Castle, which I find amazing!

A Cuban in London–Thank you, friend. The legs on the log belong to my daughter. She certainly has the joie de vivre thing down pat!
