For your weekend baking pleasure

I made this today: Hank Shaw‘s Guinness Bread with Molasses. The recipe is on Simply Recipes blog. Because I’m in the UK, I needed to substitute treacle for the molasses. It was, as Barbara Blundell might say, “Scrummy!” especially with some nice Irish butter. It’s easy! Try it :-)
Hope you all have a good weekend!

What a wonderful breakfast! I wish I could have some now. Looks healthy too. <3
with some nice kerrygold slathered on it!
Truly scrumptious.
It is possible to buy what we call Black Treacle, I’m pretty sure it is the same as molasses.
that looks gorgeous, I’m going to print the recipe, thanks for sharing…mmm
I thought it was meatloaf or a hamburger patty. Hahahah! It’s not your photography. It’s how my brain works. :)
Yum!
Cynthia–I wish I could give you a nice-sized wedge with a wee bit of butter on the side :-)
P-D–That’s it!
Moannie–That is exactly what I used! And made a mess of it as usual. I’m wearing a nice streak of it on my pink shirt. Sigh…
Christine–It was so easy! And everyone loved it. And most importantly, it was FAST. No rising time.
Laurie–You carnivore, you. I can see it now that you said it ;-)
Fantastic Forrest–It was very yum!
I also thought it was some kind of flatter than usual meat loaf!:-) Isn’t groceery shopping quite fun in another country! Sometimes frustrating, when you really need something and you can’t find it . .but it gets easier when you learn that a LOT of stuff is available, it’s just named something different. I can find my way around a Wal-Mart or a Safeway pretty well now, but I remember being fascinated by all the different stuff in the US than the UK. More confusing than shopping, AMERICAN RECIPES! I have all your terms down now, but at first!Grrr I almost cried as a newly wed wanting to make my husgand a nice meal and trying to decipher the AMerican cookery book I bought! What size CUP??? A tea cup, an egg cup, a glass cup that you drink water from??
Do you own kitchen scales now?
oh, would I not LOVE to make some of this bread for my friends and say it’s treacle bread! They would have no idea what it is! Wouldn’t that be funny?! I’m going to do it!
what’s treacle?
Thanks! Guinness and bread, what a great combination.
What a good recipe for the upcoming toast to the Irish!
I seem to have lost my baking mojo these days. I could do with some inspiration.
This looks good, what should I make to go with it? Or just on it’s own.
Great photo, you are so good at this stuff.
Can I please put this post on Expat Mums Blog?
Louisie–LOL! Yes, it took me months to find the chicken broth (with the spices, not the soups) and the baking powder/soda (totally brainwashed by US marketing)! And yes, I have a digital kitchen scale. I actually love it more than trying to measure out things in cups :-)
Chris–You’re funny! Treacle is (lazy link): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treacle It’s as close to molasses as I’ve found here in the UK.
Dusty Lens–Isn’t it?! It was delicious, too. We ate every crumb.
Bee–I think it is a good one for St. Patrick’s Day. I’ve not tried making a Soda Bread in a long while. I think it’s time to try again. I just had a flash to Central Market’s Irish Soda Bread. Yummm.
A Modern Mother–We ate it with Irish butter the first two days. Today we toasted it and ate it with Irish butter AND blackcurrant conserve. Delicious! We went for a two-hour walk this AM to burn off all that goodness. Of course you may use this on Expat Mums Blog, thanks so much for asking. I am going to add a link to that blog on my sidebar right now!
Yummy :-)
You cruel woman :-)! Here I am at almost 3 in the afternoon, drooling all over your cake. Why, oh, why, must you torture me like this? I have made a copy of the recipe. :-D
Greetings from London.
Ash–It was so good!
A Cuban in London–Sorry, friend! And it was good too ;-) I promise it is so easy to make. It’s really supposed to be made in a loaf tin, but my oven is so small that any bread made in loaf form rises too high and burns on the top of my oven. Hence the weird round loaf. Nevermind, it was delicious and I must make it again!!
I want this now, please – it looks so good, xv.
