Look what I found in my pantry

So, I’m thinking of trying this at lunch today. I know it’s not very hard core, but I want to give Marmite a sincere try and thought I should probably ease into it. Will report back ;-)

I hear it’s quite good but takes some getting used to. I hope you enjoy it!

  2. Lilly says:

Well its very much like the Vegemite we have here. I only ever eat it on buttered toast and only a scrape. I like it I have to say but it might take some getting used to as its quite salty. Its at least fun trying something new. Glad to see that you are getting some spring weather.

Don’t do it! I just saw it next to the yeast at Publix!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!! Good luck, my sister! If I were a better friend, I’d support you with a Marmite experiment of my own, but I threw my jar out long ago. At several dollars a jar at Kroger, I won’t be buying anymore anytime soon. May the force be with you.

Xoán-Wahn–Is there a Spanish equivalent? I feel like this is a rite of passage…

Lilly–OK, I’m in the mood for salty. Maybe it’s like vermouth and a whiff goes a long way. I wonder if it counts if I just look at the jar while I build my sandwich?

    Julia–You’re cracking me up, girl.

Laurie–You will be glad to know that this jar was the replacement for the one Mama DJ was supposed to give you last year. So there. I’m saving you from this fate, Obi-wan.

Marmite spread thinly on toast or a buttered crumpet is bliss.
Or tiny bit on a cheddar cheese sandwich.
We have returned to NY and I have to rush down to the English shop today to buy more Marmite.
    My American husband loves it.
    You will too.
    Keep us posted…….
    love

I’ll have to try that sometime…spread thinly on buttered toast it sounds like. You know, I bought some carrot juice this week, never liked it as a child, and now I found that I still don’t! Good luck.

    Ugh…

  9. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Elizabeth–I tried some today. I think the secret is having it with butter!

Christine–That is funny! I think it was good you tried it again, though.

Barbara–Are you telling me you’re in the “Hate It” category?!

  10. Alyson (New England Living) says:

I thought you already tried this? And I must say “ewwwww”! Yucky!

  11. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Alyson–Yes, I felt like I needed to give it another chance.

  12. Akelamalu says:

You either love it or hate it – I love it! On toast, as a drink, I even use it in gravy if I have no meat juices.

Are you sure you wouldn’t prefer some Nutella?

  15. Louise says:

Oh please, be sure to use an almost impossibly small amount, much less than you’d think! THEN it is yummy, especially on warm buttered toast, or on warm buttered crumpets. The “warm and buttered” seems to be a theme! I also enjoyed it with cheddar cheese in a sandwich, white bread, butter, just a sratch of marmite and a thick slice of cheese. Yum. Bovril is very similar but I like it slightly better. Oh, on a cold day cup of Bovril or Marmite is also nice, just a cup of boiling water with a teaspoon or two of Bovril or Marmite stirred into it.
