Roxi says…

Look! It’s Roxi reading the Carmen program from last month’s show. This is an accurate reflection of her. Get it? Reflection? Of her? Reading theatre stuff? Heh heh… Ok, never mind.
My girl was so appreciative of all of your comments and emails yesterday. Thank you so much for your encouraging messages. It really meant a lot to us.
The audition went okay–Roxi said she thinks she did a good job with her songs. It was the sight reading that gave her trouble. It wasn’t that she couldn’t do it, she just wasn’t comfortable with this exercise. The pianist told Roxi afterward that every note she sang was spot on and that she just needed to “go for it”, to blast through it with lots of confidence. The pianist also told Roxi before the audition: no matter how your audition goes, whether the judges like you or not, you are still the same musician you were when you went in. In other words, even if you don’t get in, it doesn’t mean that you’re a bad musician, it just may not be the right place.
Despite her disappointment with her sight reading, Roxi still was glad she went through with the audition. She does sit a drama exam later this month and then her voice exam in May, so I think this was excellent practice for that.
Roxi is writing a one song musical for a history project, by the way. This is not the first time she’s done something like this, but this time, she and three of her classmates will also be filming a video to go along with the song. So I guess it’s more of a music video. Anyway, can you imagine a music video based on Plessy v Ferguson?
And wrapping up the drama news, I’m supposed to help with makeup/hair for the upper school musical Guys and Dolls tonight and tomorrow. We had a dress rehearsal on Wednesday, and I immediately recognized a difference between middle school and upper school students… the kids are SO big! They have adult size bodies but still retain a bit of childhood sweetness. I was glad to see this!
I”m hoping to sit Mr. DJ down this weekend to run through my list of questions about our potential move. He’s been so busy that we’ve hardly had two minutes to chat. And actually things are busy for all of us these next two weeks. I am hoping we’ll hear back from the school in The Netherlands soon so we can move forward with our moving decision.
I was exchanging emails with another Texas expat this morning (Hi, K!) and got a hankering for some Tex-Mex. I think I’ll start Homesick Texan’s Borracho Beans in the crockpot this morning. That way, we’ll have something to eat after I get back from makeup duties.
Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

About the Author: JaPRA is an expat Texan living in Holland with her husband (Mr. DJ), their 15-year old daughter (Roxi), and their dog Trudy.

My daughter had to audition for her school (we find out around the middle of April – ack!) and she was really upset about one part of her audition. I told her that the whole point of these things is to see a kid’s potential. If they did everything perfectly they wouldn’t need to go to the school.
My daughter didn’t believe me until her art teacher told her the EXACT same thing the next day at school. As my three year old says…whatever.
Nice photo as usual. I can’t beleive you are moving to Holland and we haven’t met yet. We must get together before you go.
Julia–What did your daughter audition for? And ahhhhhhhhh!! The waiting game. That is good advice, by the way, about perfection. Makes total sense. Your three year old sounds like a hoot!
A Modern Mother–We’re not moving yet, but I’d love to meet you! Actually, it would be great to do a mummy blogger meet up, wouldn’t it?
Oh, how wonderful of the pianist to say that! Your daughter is very brave – I don’t know if I would ever want to put myself in the face of that!
Plessy v. Ferguson – the Musical! I love it. Check out my teaching blog next week on 3/28 for another unconventional musical. It will be worth your time, I promise. Mark it on your calendar.
Meanwhile, I hope you will post Roxi’s lyrics when she’s done writing it. For that matter, post the video. Your readers demand it! Please?
Oh, and I loved the caption for the reflection photo. Hee hee hee.
Oh – one other thing. How bizarre is it that Justices White and Brown were both in the majority on Plessy? Or is that too obviously a weird fact? I’d never heard that one.
What a talented daughter!
I love hearing about Roxi. She has so much verve. That Plessy v Ferguson music video sounds amazingly creative!
Good luck with getting to talk to Mr. DJ! (And have a good weekend.)
That pianist must be one of the angels on earth who uplift us daily! I LOVE your photo of Roxi. You should blow it up and make a collage with it using scraps from programs of performances that you have seen with her. You could do a companion piece with her school productions. In your spare time, I mean! Love, Mimsy
Sound advice from the pianist, I hope Roxi takes it on board. There will be other auditions and she will be successful, when the time is right. :)
Emm–That pianist was wonderful. AND talented. I got goosebumps listening to her and Roxi rehearse. WOW!
Fantastic Forrest–I will be sure to check in on your teaching blog! I’ve really enjoyed your posts there. And I didn’t realize that about Brown and White, but Roxi knew. As usual.
Rebecca–I think so. It’s actually an amazing thing to watch her grow up.
Bee–I love reading about your family as well. Enjoy the beautiful day :-)
Mimsy–That is such a good idea. I have all of her stuff here and there. I was hoping some of my Expat time would be spent organizing photos, but my collection seems to have grown exponentially. *Sigh*
Akelamalu–I think it helped Roxi relax knowing that this wasn’t our only chance. But yes, such good advice. And you are absolutely correct about things happening when the time is right!
What a great experience for Roxi! She is in the “go for it” school of life! And good for you, too, giving her the encouragement and opportunity to put herself out there.
I also posted one of my daughter’s accomplishments on Oasis blog and an Award for you! Please come over and collect your award.
Hi Japra,
Well done Roxi !
Japra
Youv’e sold beans to me. Going to have a go.
In case you haven’t found a cheese and onion pie recipe. It’s only enough shortcrust pastry for top and bottom of a pie plate The filling is fried (or boiled) peppered, sliced onions on the base, covered with sliced or grated tasty cheese and about two tablespoons milk sprinkled on the cheese before you put the lid on !
Btw, I've just realized that you are not on the sidebar of Oasis Writing Link, sorry for the oversight. I will correct it right away. <3
Go Roxi!! I remember audtions for solo and ensemble awards. It’s nerve wracking, but such a character builder. I hope she gets in. :)
Holy. You have got a lot going on. But you seem to be handling it all in stride. You make it look so easy.
Your daughter sounds like an incredible young woman. I wish I had her confidence at that age. The pianist sounds equally amazing. I have to say that there have been a few times in my life where I could have used a wise woman standing in the wings whispering all of the right things in my ear. Good luck, Roxi.
