Snowball Cakes

I like to poke around in grocery stores. Not while I am doing my regular shopping, mind you, but every once in a while, I’ll take a good look around and see if there is anything new on the shelves.
I am sure you can imagine that I’ve found quite a number of delicacies in the UK grocery stores over the past two years. Most of them have been delicious! And actually, I can honestly say, of all the things I’ve tried here, Marmite has been the only thing that I’ve not been able to eat
Here’s what I found in the bakery section yesterday while I was looking for hamburger buns for my sloppy joes:

“Snowball Cakes” are “jam-filled marshmallow and biscuit (cookie) bites in a white chocolatey coating sprinkled with coconut flakes”.
Two delicious bites of yumminess. Very different from the Moonpies of my youth.

Yum yum! I love marshmallow and anything, really.

  2. Rebecca Hickman says:

Oooo . . . scrummy! Looks kind of like a Mexican wedding cookie.

BTW, I nominated you for a pink lemonade stand award.

Loved poking around in grocery stores there! And, no I can’t eat Marmite, although the kiddles had it for tea everyday.

  4. Laurie says:

    Yummmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!

  5. Ash says:

    Scrumptious :-)

    Thanks for the treat!

I’ve always said you can tell more about a community by visiting their grocery store than any other way.

Really – I do say that.

    (And that looks pretty good.)

  7. Akelamalu says:

    You don’t like Marmite????

  8. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Emm–Have you ever had Peeps? And these Snowball Cakes were from Tesco. Check ‘em out!

Rebecca–That’s what I thought it would be, but it really is more like a gourmet moonpie ;-) Thanks for the award, friend!! I’m honoured.

Pigtown-Design–I feel like I’m letting England down by not liking Marmite. Perhaps I need to try it again. Maybe at tea instead of breakfast?

    Laurie–MMmmmm!

    Ash–Have you had these?

Anonymous friend–I think you may be right.

Akelamalu–No, I’m sorry… Can we still be friends? Actually, I am going to try it again. I shall report back :-)

Nice photo, and nice plates. They were made for each other.

  11. Dorothy says:

I also love hunting around grocery stores.

The secret to eating marmite is to have it on buttered bread and only the very tiniest amount. It’s like adding a pinch of spreadable salt. I love it – but I think I was weaned on bread and marmite, accompanied by sliced apple.

  12. Christine says:

What a delicious bite-sized treat. Do you stop at just one? (-: I love finding new things too.

  13. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Trave and tips–Thanks and thanks for stopping by!

A Modern Mother–Those treats were sitting on a Wedgewood plate I bought two years ago in Stoke-on-Trent. :-)

Dorothy–I am going to try it again. I love the idea of having apple with it too.

    Christine–I confess: I ate two ;-)

  14. Tawny says:

My Sister loves all that sort of thing, personally anything too sweet sets my teeth on edge. However I am a marmite nut, I have it on toast, on crackers in sandwiches with cheese. I love it!

  15. Bee says:

I’m in love with the way that snowball looks set against the colors and patterns in that beautiful plate!

(Marmite: can’t explain/understand its appeal. And it’s not that I don’t like salt!)

  16. Just a Plane Ride Away says:

Tawny–I am going to try Marmite again. I was just on the website on Friday looking in the “Love” section. I think I would like a Marmite and Cheese sandwich :-)

Bee–Marmite is such a strong flavour, don’t you think? Like a bullion cube. I think maybe I need to try it mixed in with other things before I give it a go on toast again.

  17. Emm says:

:o) Just remember to spread a very thin layer and it should be fine!

  18. Anonymous says:

I’ve never had it, but I think that real Marmite lovers also put butter on the toast. Perhaps the dairy fat ameliorates the intensity. As for the Snowball, I’m going to see if Central Market or our little British store has them. It looks yummy! xoxMimsy

Oh yes! You definitely have to add butter or margarine, I agree. As much as possible in fact.
