We’re s-h-o-pp-i-n-g, we’re shopping*

A restaurant near London’s Fortune Theatre where we saw “The Woman in Black”. There were some really nice-looking shops in the Covent Garden area. Too bad we didn’t have time to do a bit of browsing on Tuesday.

Yesterday, Roxi and I ventured into the town next to ours in hopes of a little beginner’s luck with the 8th grade graduation dress shopping. Of course we didn’t find anything, but we did have a fun time looking at this season’s offerings.

To my dismay and Roxi’s amusement, 80s fashion is back big time this spring. Stirrup pants (Are they called “stirrup trousers” here in the UK?), neon clothes and jewellery, tiered skirts, and ABBA-esque jumpsuits, oh no.

Roxi was so intrigued by it all that she felt driven to do a little research on 80s fashion when we got home. Here’s what she found.

As for the dress, we’ll try someplace else on Friday. Today we’re going back to London for more Spring Break fun :-)

*Anyone know the reference to this? Talk about the 80s!

I’ve found the fashions here to be very 80′s for the past couple of seasons – please tell me they’re not going to get *more* 80′s!

    • japra says:

Emm, yes, even more so. It’s the neons that are back this Spring. I think it’s the worse bit of the 80s… Just my opinion, of course!

  2. maddog says:

Nothing wrong with 80s fashion – in the 80s! lol

  3. Julia says:

Oh my gosh – the most unfortunate item from the 80′s – stirrup pants. Even worse than big shoulder pads.

    • japra says:

Julia, I heard somewhere that if you wore a “new” fashion the first time around, you shouldn’t partake during the second round. Let’s just say I’ll skip it this time ;-)

  4. Wow! Your new homes is fantastic! I love the header and the content is strong and interesting as usual. Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

  5. Christine says:

what a pretty restaurant with all that greenery.

and thanks to you and Roxi for the fashion update. I think I still have some authentic 80′s clothes in my closet, but it never comes back in quite the same way! hope she finds a gorgeous dress soon.

    • japra says:

Christine, I bet your daughter would love to know about those authentic “vintage” 80s wear! ;-)

I decided to put off dress shopping until after I take a look at graduation pics from the last few years. I want to make sure I know exactly what the school is looking for. And perhaps get some store recommendations!

  6. Anne says:

And I thought that the tapered jeans’ comeback was bad enough! Stirrup pants?!? There are so many reasonably attractive fashion items from yesteryear, and they choose stirrup pants?

Good luck to Roxi in the dress hunt–nice that she’s allowed to wear what she’d like! For my 8th grade graduation we were required to wear our “dress whites:” white pleated skirt and starched white sailor top with a navy blue tie. Yeah, not sorry I don’t have to wear those anymore.

    • japra says:

Anne, your “dress whites” sound positively Family Von Trapp–and actually cute, though I am sure you disliked them. We have to find a white or light pastel dress appropriate for a garden graduation and, yeah, you guessed it, a garden tea!

  7. Akelamalu says:

There’s nothing new in fashion – what goes around comes around. LOL

  8. Oh no. 80′s fashion is back?? Please don’t tell me this. I only just managed to shift it from my wardrobe!

  9. Stefan says:

Ah yes, the Pet Shop Boys. Fun – I think.

80′s fashion seems like it’s making a comeback here in Australia. And I hate it. Neon colours, huge cheap sunglasses, tight jeans with flowing shirts – I hate it all.

    How did this happen?!

    • japra says:

Stefan, ha! I am glad to hear you hate it. I was just asking my husband if he thought this fashion was attractive. Another big NO.

I still like PSB. They’re really campy and cheesy and AWESOME in concert–very theatrical. But about 65% of their songs make me wince ;-)

  10. It was nice reading your post. I needed to know such kind of information to update myself. I work in my friend’s boutique of flower girl dresses and also help in the online promotion.

    • japra says:

Hi Flower girl dress patterns, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.!

I think the hardest part for me about this dress shopping is 1) I don’t really know UK stores very well 2) I am looking for a specific style of dress that doesn’t seem to be in fashion right now. However, I shall persevere!

  11. xoanwahn says:

How fun! 80′s fashion is so funny (and okay-looking when done well)! I’ve also been noticing lately that 80′s style clothing is making a serious comeback. Have you seen some of the stuff offered for the fall season this year? Madrid fashion week was televised here free of charge and there are a lot of things that would have been quite common say when the Pet Shop Boys did that tour.

    • japra says:

Xoan-Wahn, I’ve not seen the Fall fashions yet! Oh dear. Well, at least everyone will be covered up. By the way, are Uggs really popular in Spain, or is it just here in the UK?

  12. Laurie says:

Yaay! Shoulder pads! They make the bottom half of me look smaller.

  13. I so don’t want to relive the 80′s!!! Bad hair, bad clothes!
