Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London

Seating at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, London.
Roxi and her classmates went on a field trip into Town yesterday. They left school at 4pm, went to dinner (the kids are allowed to break into small groups and eat wherever they like), and then saw Romeo and Juliet at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Unfortunately, Roxi didn’t get home until well after midnight, so I don’t have a review for you other than “it was really great” and “the actors were light on their feet and looked like they had studied ballet for 10 years”.
Roxi did mention that her, um, posterior hurt after sitting on the wooden benches for so long. Small wonder as the show runs 3 hours, including an interval. I might consider renting a cushion if I have the opportunity to see a show there ;-)
I asked if there were any groundlings–it was rainy and a little cool yesterday. She said yes! Poor souls. Roxi saw Antony and Cleopatra as a groundling a few years ago. It was during the HOT summer (you locals know which one I mean), and the theatre provided hats and water too, I think. If you’re dreaming about seeing a show at The Globe, perhaps you might enjoy reading this FAQ.
Roxi and her classmates are off on another field trip today… this time to an “Adventure Outing”. They’ll be gone all day today through tomorrow night. She’ll come home to crash, do a little homework, and then on Sunday afternoon… two concerts– band AND choir. It’s a busy time!

About the Author: JaPRA is an expat Texan living in England with her husband (Mr. DJ), their 17-year old daughter (Roxi), and their dog Trudy.

Sounds like she had a good time. Even if her rear paid the price for her fun.
Haha! Yes, she did have fun. It is always so nice when she can get into London with her classmates as I think they get a lot more freedom. Safety in numbers!
:) I would certainly need a cushion!!
Me too. But I’m old ;-)
It’s so exciting that the kids have these opportunities to experience life outside the classroom. Love field trips and wish American public schools would offer more than they do.
Jane, the quality of field trips at Roxi’s school has been excellent. Well, we are in England, after all! Plus since the school caters to expat kids, I think they really try to find meaningful outings.
Oh my gosh – your schedule sounds worse than mine – my son just came home yesterday to tell me that the week he has exams is the same week he was supposed to get (horrible speech reducing) bands in (then within 7 days) braces off and retainer fitted. Now I have to reschedule everything.
Oh no, Julia! That sounds like a scheduling nightmare. It’s so hard to squeeze everything in our youngster’s schedules, isn’t it? I wish you luck! But how exciting for you son! I am sure he will be glad to have those braces off.
oh, never heard the term ‘groundlings’ before, interesting. Roxi sure is busy…it’ll only get worse as she gets older! I had to re-schedule L’s haircut appointment after I found out she was over-booked for that particular day.
Christine, I know it! 8th grade is a big year here. Middle school graduation and tea, end of school part AND graduation party. Sigh. Roxi and I need to schedule haircuts soon too. I hope this week!!
What a wonderful experience for her, to be able to see Shakespeare at the Globe. So much history, it just permeates the very air of the theater…
Robin, I know exactly what you mean! Even though it’s modern, the Globe was built by hand using the same methods used in Shakespeare’s time. And all the costumes made authentically as well. I am sure Roxi would love to be part of a show at the Globe! But for now, just attending a production there is so inspiring.
I still can’t believe I got away from London without seeing a show at the globe. It’s on the top of my list for my return visit!
Kathy, as I recall you came later in the year. I am sure the season was over by then. But yes, you must come back and see a show!
I don’t think I could sit on those hard benches for 3 hours! Still the experience of actually seeing a live performance in The Globe would be worth the risk of piles! ;)
Akelamalu, I agree! And I would much rather sit on those hard benches for three hours than stand as a groundling for the same length of time!
Gosh things are busy. What great experiences she is having. I guess she will have finihsed school soon then for the summer. Still love your website desing more than any other I have seen. Truly fabulous.
Lilly, Roxi still has a couple more weeks of school, a few days of exams and then MORE parties for end of year and 8th grade graduation. It’s a busy and exciting time to be sure. Thank you so much for you continued encouragement, Lilly. It really means a lot! :-)
What a wonderful time and great experiences for Roxi !
Barbara, I am glad to see you were able to get into the blog. And yes, Roxi is having such a wonderful time. I know she will remember her years in England fondly.
I have sat through A Comedy of Errors at The Globe. I don’t remember feeling posterior pain, but then, I have lots more cushioning in that region than Miss Roxi! xox
It’s always nice to get one of Roxi’s reviews — even when they are succinct! I’ve still got The Globe on my to-do list, so any tips/helpful hints are appreciated. (Roxi certainly has been doing a lot of fun stuff at school lately.)
hi, im having reschedule thing too, lol
