Biking to the North Sea

One of the perks of living in The Hague is being less than five miles from the beach. I am sorry to say, we’ve not really take advantage of this. The only trip we’ve made out there since we moved was in late June. Shame on us! We know that the cold and wet is just around the corner and that we should take advantage of the warm weather. I guess we’ve been kind of busy…
But on Friday, the weather was too good to pass up. I declared that we should ride our bikes down to Scheveningen and have dinner. This was our first evening outing on our bikes. I was worried about riding around after sunset. As usual, I worried for nothing.

Dinner at Topkapi, a lovely restaurant located at the base of the Kurhaus hotel.

They offer a wide range of food from Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. But we always tend to order the same thing. Here’s Roxi’s Chicken Kebab. Mr. DJ and I ordered the spicy lamb.

After our huge dinner, we took a walk along the boardwalk. In the summer, there is a lot of activity on the beach. Here’s a DJ–this looks like an interesting bar. Inside, they have round beds for lounging. No, no it’s not that kind of place.

The pier near the Kurhaus. We finally had a chance to take a stroll out there. The round building is a restaurant and casino, I think.

Looking back at the Kurhaus from the pier.

It was a beautiful evening. I’ll miss these long days. Soon, the dreaded 100 days of darkness…
There is a wonderful deck on top of the pier. Doesn’t it look like a cruise ship?

For the daring, a bungee jump. Just looking at that gives me butterflies.
On our way home, we heard a loud bang. There behind us–fireworks! There is an International Fireworks Festival and Competition going on in Scheveningen right now :-)

Great pictures – what’s with that pepper?
I love the picture that you took looking back at the boardwalk – it looks like ya’ll had a little mini vacation!
Okay, I’m going to have to look up 100 days of darkness. It sounds like that movie with the guy that’s trying to solve a crime and it never gets dark and he get’s really tired. Except in reverse.
Did Roxie really eat that pepper? My girls would have been outta there so fast!! Their really wimps about food.
Fun photos. Looks like you had a great time. So do you get the days of all light and then the days of all dark? My husband lived in Alaska for a while as a kid and he said it was so weird to get used to. Are you far enough north to see the Northern Lights? If so, I’ll be very jealous. That’s something I’ve always wanted to see.
what a lovely evening out, complete with fireworks! was that a pepper on Roxi’s plate?
How lovely! The photos of the pier are great. It all looks so inviting. I almost want to forget that the water is freezing and just dive in!
How wonderful that you live so close to the ocean! The fireworks were the perfect bookend to the day!
This is so lovely! How beautiful! I can’t wait to visit!!
Can I borrow your bike?
How wonderful!
What a magical evening down to the fireworks! I love that you can bike to the sea. It looks like a different country there.
