Pannenkoek for breakfast

pannenkokenWhen we lived in England, we fell HARD for crumpets. We ate them toasted and buttered until my bloggy friend Alyson told me she used to eat them with melted cheese every morning when she lived in England. Once we tried that, there was no going back.

Then we moved to Holland. There are no crumpets in Holland. Maybe (probably) in the British expat stores, but in general, with the exception of Tex-Mex, we try to eat as the locals do. So no expat shopping . We were sad :-(

To our surprise it was at ParkPop where we found our crumpet replacement: Pannekoek. It’s kind of like a cross between a crepe and a pancake. More rubbery than a pancake. Like a flat crumpet, really.

You can buy 12-packs of the premade stuff at the grocery. It’s pretty good too! So, more often than not, this is our breakfast. Today it’s pannekoek with ham and cheese. I like to drizzle mine with stroop (syrup). Interestingly, the stroop here tastes more like a light molasses. It took a little getting used to, but I like it.

Of course, I know that we won’t be able to find pannekoek once we leave The Netherlands. So for future reference, I am including a link to a recipe I found. Maybe you’ll want to try it too!

This sounds so much better than cold cereal!

How did the first week of school go?

    • japra says:

Bee, the first week has been great! I think Roxi really likes going to these International schools (or at least American schools internationally, LOL). She’s met so many people from lots off different backgrounds. Also, she said that she can’t believe how many “arty” people are at this school. I don’t know if it’s the age (Highschool) or if there really are more arty kids here.

How is your friend’s daughter faring at her new school? You are right, Peru is a loooong way from England. I am not sure I could do it. XO to her!

OMG YUMMM! That sounds so good and the photo is really making me hungry!

Xoan Wahn, it is really good! I know I’ll need to learn how to make these myself one day, but it’s so convenient to buy them pre-packaged.

HHmmm…Van Gilse Stroop! Forgot to bring that with me from NL. I often make pancakes for the kids, in the weekends. Have you tried DROP already? Centendrop?? Oowhh..that I never forget to buy when I’m in the NLs…bags -lol. Let me know if you have, I sure would like to know what your reaction is on that. Try double salted as well…(giggle giggle).

from crumpets to Dutch pancakes! The joys of travelling. Gosh, the Dutch language calls for a good memory as in…pannenkoek!

    Yum yum
Yes, as a crumpet- deprived Brit this would work.
    And I love crepes too……..
would love to get to Holland before too very long

So is it like eating an omlette? Or a sandwich? I love crepes but I’ve only had the savory kind. I can’t imagine them for breakfast.

    • japra says:

Julia, an omlette maybe. But really, more like a crepe. Are you old enough to remember the crepe restaurants in the late 70s and 80s? There was one in Houston’s Galleria when I was growing up. I think it was called The Magic Pan or something like that. I never went there, but it was an intriguing place ;-)

  8. Mimsy says:

Yes, it WAS The Magic Pan, and it was delicious! When I looked at your recipe, I noticed that it calls for yeast. That makes it quite different from an American pancake or a French crepe. But I will bet that it tastes really good–savory or sweet!

    • japra says:

Hi Mimsy! Yes, it does call for yeast, which is why it tastes more like a crumpet ;-) And all I can think of when I think of savory crepes are the spinach and chicken crepes from the JL tea room! Oh, and to continue with my free association… orange and cinnamon rolls!!! LOL
