Christmas Market in Aachen, Germany

Dear Aachen, we fell under your medieval spell.
Your storybook-perfect Christmas market between Charlemagne’s Cathedral
and your 14th century Town Hall
made us feel like children again, giddy with the delights of the season.
Of course, you were most spectacular after dark.
And though some of your Christmas vendors seemed similar to the ones in Koln,
we still managed to come home with a bag full of goodies.
I hope we’ll be back to see you again one day soon.
PS I am planning on doing a couple of Koln + Aachen posts next week.
PPS Don’t forget to put your shoes out for Sinterklaas on Saturday night!

Oh, it looks so amazing!! Christmas time in Germany is really magical, I shall have to make a trip of it one day!
Emm, you must! Aachen is supposed to be the closest German market to the UK. I bet there are loads of bus tours. There were plenty of UK tourists about. I felt like I was back in England ;-)
I love the markets so much to see and do and eat and drink! The energy and happy Germans is a plus too!
I love them too, Kathy! I am so envious that you have one at your doorstep. I’d be there every week just so I could eat potato pancakes, sausage, etc. Plus the gluhwein!
amazing location….okay and the picture with the cathedral and the clouds….hmm..better not swear….DARN!!! THAT’S A GREAT SHOT!!! So beautiful. And I love the gingerbread girl…I just resolved to go the week without making any sweets…forget that!
Julia, credit where credit is due, that brilliant shot was taken Mr. DJ! I am so envious ;-)
I should probably do a little baking this weekend. At least some cookies for tree trimming. Hmmm. Maybe something easy like snickerdoodles.
my sister-in-law just emailed me – SNOW? In Texas, in December? Crazy!
I know! Amazing. We haven’t had a freeze here in Den Haag yet, but I understand it’s going to get colder later this week and next.
I am will have to make another batch of Christmas cookies ASAP. What a wonderful place to visit during the holidays!! I just love these photos!
Good luck with the baking! Did you hear it’s snowing in Texas today?!
so pretty…enjoy Dec 5th. So is the Christmas season over after that, until, say New Year’s?
Christine, it was beautiful–just a little cold! Yes, Christmas decorations up now, so long Sinterklaas!
Unbelievably fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW!
It really was, Laurie! We loved Aachen.
Gorgeous! One of these days I must make it over to Germany in December. I would love to walk around these markets all bundled up and sipping gluhwein! Thanks for sharing your photos.
Anne, I hope you get to go one day soon!! A friend of mine just told me about one in Brussels that sounds amazing too. I’m wondering if I can talk my husband into going before we leave for Texas later this month.

What fun! Surely I’ll be able to get to one of those cities around Christmas. Thanks for the link!
Oh, I am so envious! London has nothing like this to offer! The cultural richness of Germany seems to have permeated all the joyous celebration of Christmas to a degree I can only dream of, here. Or anywhere. Thank you so MUCH for bringing this to your readers, we are in your debt.
Never been to Aachen for the market, but I’d like to. It’s on my list along with Valkenburg.
Also testing out this google friends connect thing, not sure how it works.
