Happy New Year, friends!
These were going to be my two-fer pics for my Wordless Wednesday post, but insert long, dull excuse here, LOL!
Oh my, we’ve been having a lovely visit here in the Lone Star State. The sad thing is we can fit in only so much visiting, so much eating, so much shopping. Squeezing in a year’s worth of all that into this short time is tough. We have deep, deep Texas roots and it’s just so hard to visit every branch of our Houston lives.
We’re on Galveston Island now. My in-laws are finally back in their home after Hurricane Ike–that huge, nasty category 2 storm whose surge devastated the Island back in September 2008. My in-laws’ house had four feet of water in it and they lost so much–all but the shell of the house, really. They had to rip everything out to the studs and rebuild everything. Their new house is beautiful and fresh. They seem very happy to be back here, which is the most important part.
It’s quite familiar, but different here in Galveston too. I haven’t had a chance to go down to the historic district. I hope to get down there before we leave.
Meanwhile, the news of the underwear bomber was quite disturbing…
About the Author: JaPRA is an expat Texan living in England with her husband (Mr. DJ), their 17-year old daughter (Roxi), and their dog Trudy.

Happy New 2010! This New Year, wish all the joy and happiness in the world!
Thank you, Carmen! I wish you and yours the same as well :-)
Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Glad you’re enjoying your time back at home. I was also disturbed, and thought of you immediately, when I heard about the guy who set his pants on fire trying to blow up the plane. Normally I feel really bad for people who’ve suffered burns but in his case, not so much.
Hope you enjoy your visit and have a truly safe trip home.
Thanks, Tricia. I’m hoping there’s a lot of tight security for a while. I don’t mind the inconveniences…
Happy New Year! Good luck with all the new security regulations now, I heard women are having to leave their big purses behind!
Thanks, Christine. I’m going to have to log on pretty soon and check out what’s happening with carry-ons, etc.
Happy New Year!
That’s so good that you were able to make it back to Texas and see the new home. I hope you don’t have too horrible delays on return flight.
The only good thing that has come out of the underwear bomber is that people might buy more books – the only item you are allowed to have in your hands at the end of the flight.
Sarah, I’m really going to have to find out about luggage for the flight back.
Hope you and your family are enjoying your time off. I’ve been in my own little Texas world over here and haven’t made my blog rounds. Hope to do that soon!
It is nice to have you back!
Beste wensen voor jullie ook!! I hope you go on having a great time! I know that time is always short, but I hope you get to see all the people you want and visit the places you want, too!
About the security issue: I don’t think the problem is much for flights leaving the US as much as flights into the US, but yep, check online before you fly back to NL.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday!
Aledys, everything went very smoothly at the airport and when we landed at Schipol, the passengers gave the crew a huge round of applause. I think we were all happy we made it here safely.
Hi Yall !
Merry New Year! I am so glad you are getting the chance to see the remodel. the footprint is the same which is comforting. I wish we could spend more time together…We have so much to catch up on. I wanted to have a really cool new years resolution, so I chose a 365 day photography shoot with Blog. It is on my wall on Facebook. We started it off with a sick child. But all is well. We love you all and miss you much. Keep in touch.
Happy new year to you all too, Michelle. Good for you on the 365 project. I know you’ll do a fabulous job :-)
Happy New Year – I love the pic of the three trucks – so perfectly Texas! Whenever I go I have to stop myself from honking at every Aggie I see – they’re everywhere – it takes me a while to calm down and realize it’s nothing special – in Florida I see another Aggie maybe a couple of times a year.
Julia, I’m glad you got the truck thing. I swear, I took too many of those shots! They say Texas to me too. Every once in a while I’ll see one over here and get a little homesick. Ha!
They have big monster trucks in NL? Today I pulled up to a stoplight and I thought a bus was next to me, it was just someone’s Fsomething50. Can you imagine someone shipping one of those to Europe? They’d probably get arrested or something.
Happy New Year JAPRA!! I love Galveston – my sister went to TAMUG for her Bachelor’s degree and it was always so much fun to visit!
Lucylucia, I forgot about that. You did mention that once. Galveston isn’t the same, but she’s getting there.
Happy New Year! I love the Texas flag! Why do they call it the Lone Star State? I think I would go mad taking photos of flags there, given my love of flags.
Emm, here’s what I found about the Lone Star State name:
“The Lone Star State
Perhaps one of the most recognized nicknames of any state, “The Lone Star State” comes from the symbolism of the star on the 1836 flag of the republic, the “National Standard of Texas.” The single golden star on a blue background signified Texas as an independent republic and was a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas State Flag and on the Texas State Seal today.”

And since you like flags, you should probably learn about the Six Flags over Texas too! ;-)

Oh my gosh! Texas has the most colourful, interesting history! I might just have to learn a bit more about it, given that it is currently #4 on my list of places I’d like to emigrate to.
