Ask an Expat: Breakfast of Champions ;-)

This was actually going to be my Wordless Wednesday post yesterday, but I thought it needed a bit of explaining. One of the things Roxi likes best about the cereals here in the Netherlands is they contain REAL chocolate. This is the best one we’ve tried so far: Quaker’s (yes, like Quaker Oats, I think!) Cruseli. It’s a granola based cereal with chunks of dark chocolate. It is SO good. I eat this for dessert.
That’s Mr. DJ in the background, by the way. You can see that he’s not eating cereal for breakfast. He’s having a ham and cheese croissant ;-)
Oh, remind me to tell you about hagelslag one day soon!

Hellooo, finally bug-free?! I have no alerts anymore since you’ve fixed it;-))
I have been here soooo often, read all of it, but had absolutely no time to leave a comment, till now. So, the cereal thing I ate as breakfast, snack, desert…when ever I could. It’s addictive! So, I understand ;-) And the Hagelslag…I think you might need a few posts about that. There are just too many sorts and allll of them too delicious. I’m out of Hagelslag at the moment, but not for long though -lol-. Love that blue white tea cup on the picture btw.
Ja! Finally bug free :-)
I need to go to AH and buy some hagelslag. You know, strictly for reporting purposes ;-)
So I was thinking I was going to hear about some super healthy cereal. And then you got my attention with Chocolate! I just got REALLY hungry.
Ha! No, we’re pretty much a chocoholic family. I was trying to see if this was sold in the US, but it looks like no… But maybe there’s something similar?
Yum, yum! That looks really good – I must look out for something similar in shops here.
Emm, if you find one you like, please let me know! Roxi used to eat Coco Rocks in England :-)
I’m a bit limited unfortunately as I don’t eat wheat! Well, I am slowly finding that I can eat pizza or pasta for supper but sandwiches and cereals are no good.
Oh no! That does make things difficult! Are you allergic to wheat?
I haven’t tried this cereal yet – but you know, I’m not used to having cereals for breakfast. I want to try it now, you certainly got my attention with the word “chocolate” :o)
Ahhh hagelslag! I took a selection with me when we went to Arg. as treats for my family and they loved it – they found it quite unusual.
Aledys, I’m not a big breakfast cereal eater either, but I do like it for snacks! And this one in particular is especially nice as a dessert LOL! And speaking of chocolate, did you notice AH has the Easter chocolates out now? MMMM. Lekker!
Today when I was at the supermarket I looked for this cereal and bought it :o) I haven’t tried it yet, considering it’s got chocolate, I think I’ll leave it for snacking at the weekend as a treat :o)
Already Easter chocolates?! Oh dear… I haven’t yet lost all the extra calories from Christmas and they’re already tempting me with Easter chocolates? It’s not fair… :o)
Aledys, I hope you enjoy the cereal! Roxi had some for breakfast and noticed that the box was nearly empty. She proclaimed she did NOT eat it all. I confessed that I gave her a little help ;-)
Oh, I know what you mean about those extra calories!!!!!!!! Hopefully the weather will get better soon and we can get out for more exercise.
Sounds more like dessert than breakfast to me!
I think it would be awesome on some vanilla yogurt!
Is Hagelslag pronounced like I think it is? I would think that this would be a marketing challenge in America. “Hey, you! What a bite of this great Hagelslag?” Not quite working. Cereal is awesome. It’s my major food group. I go through a box of Total every week!!
LOL! You are probably right. I remember when I first saw the word “Slagroom” on a dessert menu. I thought ewww! Turns out it’s whipped cream ;-) Delicious whipped cream…
It sounds delicious but I couldn’t have the chocolate – I’d have to pick those out and give then to MWM! :)
Oh no! Are you allergic? :-( Well, the granola is very nice too. It has a nice cinnamon flavour.
I’d eat that for dessert too! Can’t wait to hear about hagelslag. I thought I was a good speller until I saw some of these dutch words, can’t get my head around them!
Christine, I had to laugh about your spelling. I had such a hard time in my lessons that my teacher actually asked me if I was dislexic! LOL
Sounds absolutely scrummy. I wonder if I could get away with hiding chocolate pieces to common or garden muesli
Barbara, I really think you should try it! Just chop up some milk or dark chocolate and sprinkle it in :-)
okay, now I have to go back up and see about hagelslag. I didn’t see it up there!
dark chocolate in muesli ?!? Are you KIDDING? I’m moving there right now.
do you want some all purpose flour ? I’ll mail that to you, and you can send me cruesli. (but don’t send it until I send the flour!! I was already late with the postcard!)
Chris, I haven’t blogged about hagelslag yet… Maybe next week!
And yeah, real chocolate in cereal. What an awesome concept, eh?
Wow you found my favorite cereal in The Netherlands! Aren’t these great??? Yum!!
Magda
Magda, they sell this in Greece too?! So awesome :-)
No, I don’t think they sell them there. I only found them when I moved to Holland from Greece :)
