Dutch Pea Soup (Erwtensoep)

Ertensoeppakket

I was at Albert Heijn’s yesterday to pick up some stuff to make BD treats for Roxi’s math class (they need all the sugar they can get–LOL!) when I saw this Erwtensoep kit in the veggie section. Erwtensoep is a hearty split pea soup and though I’ve eaten it a couple of times, I’ve never tried to make it. It’s a cinch–I just threw everything into my crockpot (after soaking the dried split peas for 1 hour in boiling water) and six hours later I had soup.

Here’s the recipe I used.

BTW, yesterday, I posted on my Facebook page a status that said I was making this soup. One of my friends, who happens to be Dutch, commented “Bah!” meaning she doesn’t like it! LOL. Well I guess I don’t care for all the stereotypical southern US foods either. For example, I might have said the same thing if someone had said she were making… grits! Bah ;-)

Other news:

  • We’ve had crazy weather since Friday. Today we’ve had rain, snow and sleet.
  • Roxi did a bit of recording in the studio (Evanescence’s “My Immortal” and My Chemical Romance’s “Dead!”–we need to mix it down, but I’ll put them up somewhere when it’s done. :-)
  • I’m still working on my Drawing + Painting Portraits and Mondo Beyondo classes. Only two more weeks left! After that I’ll have a few travel posts to share that I almost forgot about.
  • Roxi sang a solo in a music festival (judged) on Saturday.
  • We can get Girl Scout cookies here!!!!!!

Ohhhh, I love split pea soup and usually make a big pot every winter, at least once.

I love the soup kit! I don’t like grits either. I love the line in My Cousin Vinny “A grit? What’s a grit?”

Pouring rain here today. Good News: I got to wear my Tamara Henriques rainboots to the grocery store today. Bad News: my bike and I are grounded.

    Hej friend of Bee,

Just read the comments on the last entry of blog camp, I still want my blog camp bubble to return. So decided to hop over to your place and saw your post of erwtensoep. Oh I wish I could get some spliterwten here in Denmark. What more can a Dutch girl wish for than a very large pot of erwtensoep?

Thank you for reminding me of my foodroots.

Oh no! You can’t get split peas in Denmark? Would you like for me to mail you some? Any friend of Bee’s is a friend of mine! :-)

I don’t like grits either, but I do love pea soup, especially ones you can make like that. Mind you, I’d need a crockpot.

You know, I love the soup goodies photo, and the fact that Roxy sings and mixes those cool tunages, and I just saw your groovy portraits, but…

    You Get Girl Scout Cookies?!

    YAY!!

Hey there! I’m an expat too and even though I’ve been living in the Netherlands for almost 3 years now, I’ve NEVER had dutch pea soup! Shame on me, I know.
I’m thinking about cooking it soon though.

    Albert Heijn! So many memories.
I really like that soup; I had it at a wonderfully atmospheric restaurant on a cold wet February day (much like this one, no doubt).

Where do you get the girl scout cookies from, btw?

I love split pea soup AND grits, especially when I make them as Italian polenta. You would like mine…Savory and cheesy!

I KNOW I would love your grits, Mimsy. I adore everything you cook! I was just thinking about those delicious bite-sized yummies you make with a tortilla, cream cheese and beef. Lekker!
