Côte d’Azur: Antibes

I am not sure if it was the amazing weather or the stunning scenery, but we loved Antibes best of all the cities we visited on the French leg of our trip to the Riviera. To us, Antibes was the most “real” feeling–cozy cove beaches, a beautiful coastal walk, and a pretty but not pretentious old town. Half a day will get you a small sample of Antibes. Fans of Picasso might want to plan some extra time to visit the Picasso Museum there.
The train ride from Nice to Antibes is less than 30 minutes, much of it quite scenic with the snow capped Alps coming into view over the blue of the Mediterranean.
This was our view during our impromptu picnic lunch. We bought tasty ham, cheese, and BUTTER baguette sandwiches from one of the many beachside kiosks. Inexpensive lunch, million dollar view! Picnicking on the beach was a popular activity this day. We saw one group of people gathered around a beach blanket waiting for their friend to open the wine. When the cork popped, the man uttered a satisfied “Voilà!”
It was a very French moment ;-)

Oh great shots. I particularly love the streets.
Thanks, Akelamalu! I loved those tiny streets. Very magical :-)
Once again, amazing pictures. That picnic sounds like the BEST thing ever (from now on I’m going to say “voila” when I manage to get a wine bottle uncorked). The picture of the person riding the bike makes me want to go to Europe and rent a bike – what a neat way to see new things.
LOL, we now say “Voila!” every time we hear a cork pop. Maybe with champagne, we should add in an “Eh” as in: “Eh, Voila!”?
I don’t know about in Antibes, but in several places we visited, you can rent bikes either from individual shops or from the automatic bike rental racks. Have you seen those?
came right over when I saw Cote D’Azur! What fabulous scenery, restful and peaceful ahhh
Christine, my friend, you need to get over here!
Gorgeous! I want to be there now!
Kim, y’all should definitely go. It’s such an easy trip from here. Go off season, though. I am sure it is a mad house in July and August.
“Voila!!!” kind of sums up this post. Can you take me in your coat pocket on your next trip?
Tricia, maybe we all just need to meet there next time ;-)
The comment about the group of friends waiting for the wine was funny =)
Great shots- brings back memories of the seaside and the smell of the sea-breeze air.
Thanks, Duncan! It’s a beautiful place :-)
How neat to be able to see snowy peaks while on the beach!
That was the deal clencher, Kathy! It was stunning.
*Sigh* I definitely think I need to take a holiday in the Cote d’Azur before we leave Europe. Not sure when though, as holidays to Scotland, South Africa, Italy and San Diego must surely come first yeah, Cote d’Azur is on that list.
