Côte d’Azur: Cannes

I’ve been trying to think of what to tell you about Cannes. It was our last of the Cote d’Azur cities we visited so it had a lot to live up to. To be honest, it wasn’t high on our lists of places to see while in the French Riviera, but how could we not take a few hours to visit this famous town? We were in the neighbourhood, after all. :-)
It definitely had the feel of a bigger city.
Complete with too many cars and a row of high-end shops that looked like they were uprooted from Beverly Hills.
Cannes does have a beach.
And it looks like it must be a happenin’ kind of place.
I will say this: Cannes offered the best people watching.
Lots of people were sunning themselves along the promenade doing just this.
Oh, there are many small dogs in Cannes. They were very well behaved and sporting posh collars.
Of course, Cannes is the site of the Cannes Film Festival, which occurs May 12-23 this year, by the way. You know, just in case you were wanting to go.
A public WC,
a pretty carousel,
an “American Embassy”,
and gents playing boules in the Marche aux Fleurs.
Hungry, we made our way up Rue du Suquet to read the menus. Unfortunately we were too early for dinner.
So we took some steps up to
this ruin
and this view,
this view,
and this view.
An hour later, we made our way down to dinner. It was delicious! More on that later ;-)
For planning purposes, Cannes is about 30 minutes from Antibes and about one hour from Nice by train.

It looks great. I like the last few photos the most.
I really liked the old part of Cannes better as well, Invader_Stu. Thanks!
It does look like Beverley Hills! And the beach area looks very trendy.
Yeah, a bit too hip for me, I am afraid… I liked the old-world feel of the old town best :-)
Gorgeous pictures….Never made it past Paris but I think I will add that to my list of future trips.
So much to see and so little time… :-)
your pics are beautiful but I’m not sure I’ll be adding Cannes to my wish list…so was the beach not so great?
Julia, Cannes was my least favourite of the SoF towns. Too metropolitan (and generic in that high-end way) for my tastes.
The beach seemed nice, but it was too cold for bathing suits, much to Roxi’s relief, if you know what I mean… LOL!
I was thinking that shot reminded me of Beverly Hills before I read it. Funny! Great shots. It does look like quite the people watching town.
Alyson, I know some people really like luxury shopping, but sadly I’m not one of them. That area could have been anywhere! That said, that was definitely the most interesting spot to people watch ;-)
We’ve been to the south of France several times, but never to Cannes. I would love to go to the Film Festival some year, but only if I could be guaranteed a good seat! I have to admit that people-watching is one of my very favorite things.
Gorgeous carousel. Did you see anyone riding it?
Bee, I wouldn’t turn down an all-expense paid trip to the Cannes Film Festival, especially if someone made all of the travel arrangements. I imagine that is a huge organizational headache.
I didn’t see anyone on the Carousel, but it was a Monday–guess all the kids were at school.
I’ve finally made it to your Cannes post! Lovely photos and a charming tale! It sounds like it might be nice but perhaps a bit too… rich.
