I think the statue is trying to say “Seriously, go over there, yes, to that soda machine, get me a Coke and bring it back here.”

I want to know where he is directing me. Because if a man is going to tell me where to go I need to know where he is pointing me so I don’t get lost!

  13. Go West young man, but watch out for the lake.

  14. Tarvoke says:

In Den Haag daar woont een graaf,
    en zijn zoon heet Jantje.
Als je vraagt waar woont je pa,
dan wijst hij met zijn handje,
Met zijn vingertje, met zijn duim,
Op zijn hoed draagt hij een pluim,
    Aan zijn arm een mandje,
    Dag mijn lieve Jantje.

In The Hague there lives a count
and his son is called Jantje (Johnny)
When you ask where does your dad live
    He’ll points with his hand
With his little finger, with his thumb
On his hat he wears a plume
On his arm he carries a little basket
    Goodbye, my dear Jantje.

The statue of Jantje was made after a nursery rhyme in which he features. Jantje isn’t an imaginary character, he did exsist. Jantje was a son of Count Floris V. He became count himself at the age of 13 in 1296 when his father was murdered. He was only count for 2 years. Family and enemies put so much pressure on him that he died of stress at the age of 15, shorty after English nobles had forced him to step down.

  15. Aledys Ver says:

:o) When I first saw this statue by the Hofvijver, I thought it represented the Queen (as in Beatrix) because of the hat …
