What we did for Halloween

What we did for Halloween

Halloween evening: “just got back from dinner at our little neighbourhood Italian restaurant. There were a bunch of Dutch kids running from restaurant to restaurant to grocery store trick-or-treating! And each establishment was giving out candy. How about that? I don’t think the kids were knocking on people’s doors, though. Interesting, huh?”

Surprises in the mailbox :-)

Surprises in the mailbox :-)

Just look what my bloggy friend Julia of A Bike Ride to the Beach sent me! This mix (well, in a slightly different package–when did this happen?!?) was a constant in my Texas kitchen. Of course, I couldn’t find it in England and had to find a from-scratch, “this is close enough” recipe. But without [...]

Did you want an egg with that burger?

Did you want an egg with that burger?

Lunch at a pub in Rotterdam yesterday. Unexpected… I ate the egg on the side. It did remind me of the Full English Breakfast in a Bun I had earlier this year. In general, though, I prefer my burger zonder gebakken ei (without fried egg). Next time I’ll read the menu more carefully. :-)

When in Belgium…

When in Belgium…

Always enjoy a lovely beer with your meal. (Isn’t that blue bottle pretty? It’s sparkling water.) And if your travelling companion asks if it is time for chocolate, always say “yes”. ~ We were in Gent yesterday… more later!

Pizza, Gemengde, and Rock Palace

Pizza, Gemengde, and Rock Palace

I found this recipe for Sweet Paul’s Grilled Pizza last week, and I could NOT stop thinking about it. My stumbling block was the grill part. We have a grill, but I’ve not tried using it here because of our close neighbours and their open windows. Besides, every time I tried to use the grill in [...]

Pannenkoek for breakfast

Pannenkoek for breakfast

When we lived in England, we fell HARD for crumpets. We ate them toasted and buttered until my bloggy friend Alyson told me she used to eat them with melted cheese every morning when she lived in England. Once we tried that, there was no going back. Then we moved to Holland. There are no [...]

A bit of “Texas” on this side of the pond

A bit of “Texas” on this side of the pond

Whew! It’s been hot and humid here in Den Haag lately. For all y’all Texans, think late May. The temps have been in the high 80s, low 90s, but we don’t have AC of any sort. So add in full sun, high humidity and very little wind, and we’re talking some borderline miserable weather. Guys [...]

Dit is mijn fiets! (This is my bike)

Dit is mijn fiets! (This is my bike)

Here’s my new bike! I took this photo on Sunday while we were on our way to ParkPop (billed as Europe’s largest free music festival) in Zuiderpark. As I was getting ready to snap this pic, Mr. DJ laughed and said you all would look at this photo and think I am an avid cyclist. [...]

Kew Garden, England (Part I)

Kew Garden, England (Part I)

On Tuesday, my good friend S and I visited the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This year, the garden is celebrating its 250th birthday!  The garden is huge: 121 hectares or 300 acres. We were there for three hours and probably saw less than half of it. And we were being [...]
