About JaPRA
Hiya, Howdy, Hallo, Bonjour, Goedmorgen, Hola, Dzien Dobry, Guten Tag, Dobry Den!
I’m an expat Texan currently living in Holland, where we moved in June 2009. This is my family’s second expat experience. My husband (Mr. DJ), our 15-year old daughter (Roxi) and I moved to England in February 2007 when my husband accepted a job [...]
April Food Day
I am making cupcakes again for one of the high school boarding students at Roxi’s school. This is the third time I’ve volunteered to do this this year. While it is a bit of work, I don’t mind it. I feel sad for these boarders, being away from their families on their birthdays. Perhaps I’m projecting a [...]
Living as an American (Texan!) in England
Yesterday, I was exchanging messages with Emm about what to write for World Blog Surf Day. I was trying to think of a way to boil down my expat experience here in England. Two years of living abroad was a bit too much to condense into a short post. However, one thing I kept circling [...]
Roxi says…
Look! It’s Roxi reading the Carmen program from last month’s show. This is an accurate reflection of her. Get it? Reflection? Of her? Reading theatre stuff? Heh heh… Ok, never mind.
My girl was so appreciative of all of your comments and emails yesterday. Thank you so much for your encouraging messages. It really meant a [...]
Monday ramblings
If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know about my ongoing love of bikes in Europe, specifically in The Netherlands. I saw this sad little bicycle in London along the Thames a couple of weekends ago. Poor thing. I have photos of happier bikes here and here.
We went to a nearby garden for [...]
Thoughts on Going "Home"
View from our hotel room.
Ten days. It didn’t sound that long when we were planning it, but our schedule was so tightly packed that it seemed like we had been in Texas for about a month by the time we left on New Year’s day.
Some visiting highlights included:
five days with my parents (and my mother’s [...]
Thanksgiving menu and other food thoughts
I am feeling better today. I got a lot of planning done this weekend, plus it SNOWED yesterday! Ok, it was snow/sleet and not very much of it, but it was pretty while it lasted.
In Thanksgiving news, Roxi and Mr. DJ voted the turkey off our menu in favor of a “Honey Baked” ham. This [...]
Tin of Tomatillos
Howdy
I thought you’d like to see
what my “catering-size” tin
of tomatillos looked like.
The fruits ranged from one inch
to two and a half inches
and felt
like leathery water balloons,
in a way.
When I cut them open,
the insides oozed out.
It was kind of gross*.
Anyway,
I have enough tomatillos here
to make green chili and pork
six more times.
But maybe, I’ll try making
some Ninfa’s Green [...]
Green Chili and Pork
I am feeling tired and quiet today. I had a cup of Earl Gray a bit too late yesterday and ended up staying up past midnight.
But I managed to get to the grocery and other little shops on High Street this morning. Got Roxi a new pair of school shoes–they have to wear dress shoes [...]
Today is one of those days I wish we had a fireplace
Trudy in front of a snug little cottage not far from where she likes to run. Doesn’t it look like Snow White must live there? Taken on my Blackberry Pearl.
I finally am feeling just about normal! I got sick on Oct 31 with a sore throat, fever, cough, and eventually laryngitis for four days. Roxi, on the other [...]
